First off, I am new here, what a great site!!! Hello everyone. Anyway my question is this; will a tilt steering column from a 1983 Suburban (I think that is it) fit without any problems in a 1976 3/4 ton pick-up which does have a tilt, but something is really loose. 76 is a 4X4 if that makes any difference. I am glad to have found this site and look forward to all the available info here. Thanks for any help you all might be able to offer me.

Pretty sure it will bolt up fine and plug in. I think the intermediate shaft for the 76 won't go with 83 column so grab the intermediate shaft from the 83 and you should be set...

1983 had the cruise/wiper on the stalk too. But if that doesn't bother you, get the intermediate shaft as wll and you're good to go.

I believe that started in 1984 but either way it would work

You will have to tear the column apart almost as much just to replace the turn signal switch so if it's just a loose column why not fix it? With a few simple tools and an hour of your time you'll have it tightened back up and ready to rock and roll. You''l need a steering wheel puller, lock plate depresser, pick tools, pivot pin tool, inverted torx sockets, phillips screwdriver and maybe a dab of grease. If you are going to attempt to fix it we can help walk you through it. Welcome aboard.

All the responses have been great. Yes it does have the cruise on the...stalk? Is that what it is called? I do have an assortment of tools; could someone explain the fix for this problem, that would be greatly appreciated. My knowledge of the column includes ignition replacement and turn signal canceler, probably not the right term there! The looseness is right at the "knuckle" where the column tilts, slight up and down and side to side play; not extreme, but not normal either. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

And the fix it documented in the tech section here that should give you and idea.

I just rebuilt a column I bought from a member on the board, and literally, if I hadn't been having to hold it while standing at the tailgate of my truck, 1 hour is no joke. What slowed me down to a crawl for awhile was dropping 3 of the little ball bearings at different times..and naturally, they either bounced off into the gravel, or just fell to the gravel outright..the first one I dropped, I needed to run an errand anyway, so I stopped by the store I work at and bought one replacement. Then, after I dropped the other two, I bought 5 more just in case. You probably wont be able to rent or borrow one of the pivot pin pullers, but the lockplate press is available at both autozone and O'Reillys..I bought the pivot pin remover from O'Reilly's, and borrowed the lockplate press.
Now I just have to take the time to figure out how to swap the fresh column in place of my old one..
