Title: Reinstall engine and trans together
Post by: Gusgus74 on September 02, 2010, 08:28:56 pm
I'm getting ready to reinstall my new 383 back into the 74 LWB. Is it possible to install the engine and trans together. I have a tilter and would prefer NOT to wrestle with the TH350 under the truck if I can avoid it. What I'd like to know is can the motor/ trans assembly be tilted enough to slip it in. I was able to remove the 3spd trans along with the engine when I pulled it out, but the TH 350 looks a lot more bulky. Thanks.

Ive done it once. The front end needs to be about a foot off the ground ( no big deal) in order to get the room needed to get the tranny tailend to clear the ground. If you have your radiator out, be sure to put a peaice of plywood onfront of your condensor ( if you have one) to protect it. I learned the hard way.

it definately can and it alot easier that way. You can use the tiler if you have it, or hook a strap to the transmission to lift the tail enough, or take the front end off the truck at least the grille and such. But alot of the times you can just hook em up and put em down in there and just do it alil at a time, go down turn, tilt raise whatever and it'll eventually find it's way back home. I put my 350 and th350 in my 88 4x4 w/o a tilter and w/o removing the front end, did the 85 monte carlo that way twice, did dad's 84 that way as well all had th350's and his 84 had a long tail th350 so it was longer and his is a short bed.

try not to have the trans fill with fluid you might make a mess

or buy/make a plug for the tailshaft or if you got an old driveshaft yoke shove it in there to plug the tailshaft and help stop leaks. You will also need something over the line holes incase it turns over or something, I've installed engine/trans with the cooler lines hooked up before, then the dipstick, you can have it on there or you can plug it off with something as well.

If you can though as mentioned just drain it before you pull it or put it in whichever way.
