so I'm new to the form so hello to all and thanks for your time as i sit here with two trucks i have found my self stump i have 1979 k10 with 6 bolt rims that has a 350 thats had a th350 that was hooked to a 203 ( 2wd and 4wd ) witch i liked good on gas summer great in winter but the th350 broke down so i pick up a 1984 k10 with 8 bolt rims that has a fresh 350 fresh th400 and a 205 ( awd ) with a plow I'm not a big fan of this awd and don't know what to swap know and need to know what i can do to have a th400 with a 205 is it a scrap yard hard find i can post pictures as i have the cab and front clip of the parts truck and i have the tranny and transfer case out of my good truck i know the th350 th400 are different spline nothing looks the same
-
That's a long sentence ??? Are you asking a question?
-
I think what he’s asking is what does he need to get his old 203 to bolt to his new 400 cause the 205 that came off his 400 is awd (didn’t know they came that way) and he likes his 203 cause its part time
-
well I have no clue either what they are asking but they have part time kits you can put in the full time cases. They have several different adapters for t-cases maybe you can find one for the th400 and use the th350's old t-case, or convert the 400 t-case to part time.
Or if you don't need the th400 you can trade it to a trans rebuilder and he'll gladly rebuild the th350 for you for the th400 ours did.
-
OK I will shoot at it! ???
(1) As far as I know 205s never came full time / AWD.
(2) If it has 8 lug wheels it can only be a K20, or K30.
(3) 84 with a 205 if its original would be a K30, a K20 would have been a 208 t case.
(4) Sounds to me like the 84 with the fresh 350, fresh TH400, and a 205 is the no brainer drive train to use.
Which one has the better cab, and sheetmetal?
Personally I would use the better cab on the 84 chassis, and personal preference her and if it was salvageable the 79 front clip.

ok, sorry for not being to the point.. i just need to know how i go about using this th400 with my old 205. even thow it does not bolt up the 205 is 2 and 4 wheel drive, the 203 came with the 400 witch bolts right up. how much is this kit for the 203.. do i need a new\used 205 from a scrap yard there a lot of things on my mind and a lot of things i need to do in 2 months, should i keep and use the front and rear end's out of the k20-30 they seem to be beefer and is there a way to swap out the hubs i dont mind hoping out to lock them this truck will not see off road well any hard core stuff its a work truck that i want to be tough and clean i know i have alot of work but i just wanna get it running\moving and make some money and i'll work on the other stuff as time goes i'm also on a tight budget like every one so whatever i dont use i will sell after i'm done plus my yard is small and im doing this all by my self with simple tools and for those of you who dont understand i will explan in to more detail if you know something i dont thanks every one ps im gonna try and send some pictures

Welcome to the site! Not to sound like your 7th grade English teacher, but if you want converse with people that don't know you & can't see what your talking about...your at least going to need to use some capital letters, punctuation & break this stuff down into sentences to some degree. This will help other help you by understand what it is your wanting/trying to do.
As for your pieces & parts, Blazin has you pretty much covered.
I'm guessing that you have the numbering of the transfer cases amiss & possibly a truck or Two with mis-matched parts.
The gear driven cast iron (smaller case) is the NP 205, it is a part time unit & has never been a awd(?). It has been made in coarse spline (manual transmissions), TH 350 input shaft & Th400 input shaft. Without adapters or disassembling the units guts...you can not put one on the other transmission.
The chain driven cast iron (BIG) case is the NP 203, it is originally a full time unit, however many kits are available to convert it to a part time unit. Likewise, the input is either TH 350 or TH 400.
The Aluminum case is the NP 208, it is a part time unit that comes in all Three input splines.
Sort out what you have for sure or post some pictures & someone will tell you what you have & go from there. Good Luck on your build, Lorne

That was good reading Irish_Alley and thank you for showing me that kit but 437.50 thats 1\3 of what i payed for the hole parts truck. I know 500 us dollares is not much the the world today. I just want to know the cheapest way or if im out of luck I will use the 203 as much as i dont want awd so the is no factory 205 for a th400 i just dont want to do any jobs twice. Its bad enoght imdoing this in my back yard with crap tools by my self...

There is a kit for part time awd for the 203 I have it in my truck it just turns 4x4 unlock into 4x2

I have the conversion kit in my 203 and Warn premium hubs.
-
To get the 205 to mate to the TH400 with out an adapter kit you will have to tear it down, and swap in an input shaft from a 205 that was originally mated to a TH400, or a later SM465. Lots of labor but the input shaft is most likely still available new, or could be found used easy enough. One plus to this is you could replace any worn bushings / bearings while your in there.
Is there two U bolts on the right side of the front axle or is it one U bolt and two studs with nuts that hold the spring plate down?
-
Thank Irish_Alley that's great info, I just might buy the cheap kit for the 203 to get me by untill I can get the parts for my 205 or one that fits. Now there is a half inch of play in the 203 is that a norm ? Blazin if I can find the parts cheap or a 205 for a 400 that will be the way. Is shiping gonna be worth it I live in Owen Sound it's slim pickins here, but I'll call around on Tuesday I have called scrap yards around here before and there is only one truck 2x4, not much good to me, other then odd's and end's. Things that where better then mine I took. Now as for the front and rear end's are they better then what I have, should I save them and use them later. do I need to use them with the 203 untill I get a 205 that works. Can I swap hub's, I know what your asking but I'll send pictures. my good truck has blue cheepoo shock and hurten 350 and the other is my rotten part's rude..other then that 350. And thanks every one its nice to know there's people out there that dont judge a book by cover but what we drive.....

so as I see it. It should polt right up but is it worth it gearing wise if there are number's I can crab let me know.... I feel like I oh you guys somthing.. but all I have is thanks ALOT this site is saving big time
-
Thinking that the front axle isn't a Dana 60 but still hard to tell without seeing the cover, and the way the springs are held to the axle. 3/4 ton stuff is a little stronger generally, typical a little lower gears too, but could be the same. Best way to tell the gear ratio is to pop the covers off and count the teeth on the ring, and the pinion gears. Then divide the pinion number into the ring number.
-
I'm thinking it ain't since they used nuts
-
All my 60s came with studs, and nuts. The angle of that pic its hard to tell. Thinking its not though. Make it a K20.
-
iv only seen one 60 lol and it had bolts thought they all did but hey you learn something everyday. if you dont your dead
