Title: Rear axle swap?
Post by: Gearhead1 on September 08, 2010, 09:25:35 am
Hey everyone, I have a 10 bolt posi for my 87 R10 that needs a complete rebuild (brakes included). I['m considering a swap to another axle entirely if I can find one in good condition.

Can anyone suggest a better alternative? I'd like to upgrade to rear discs as well and I'm wondering if a later model trucks may have come with a better set-up? I'd like to build it to handle an eventual 400hp - 450ft/lb engine upgrade

Someone makes a disc brake kit for it. I think it uses newer GM parts.

Thanks.
I did see a cool thread here on a disc brake conversion. I was hoping there might be another GM product  that had the same width axles that might work so I didnt have to do so much work. (wondering about newer trucks, vans or Impala/caprice's etc

I would just rebuild your Ten Bolt rearend, If it is a 8.5 Ten Bolt. I have an 8.5 Ten Bolt with an Eaton Posi  Unit, Moser Axles, Richmond 3.73 Gear pushing a built small block around 375 H.P. The person who built my axle assembly said this axle assembly is good for up to 550 H.P. It's much easier to work with what you have, Go Spitfires.
