I'm about to buy new aftermarket gauges for my 78 Silverado it's down to either Auto Meter or Stewart Warner. As far as the oil pressure and water temp, which would you guys go with, mechanical or electrical? And why? Thanks!!

I would go electrical, just in case the mechanical tube rubs and starts leaking. Plus the tube connections need to be perfect so they dont leak.

I will be on the other side of that fence. I like mechanical whenever I can use them. No sending units to worry about going bad.

I've heard a lot of people say the mechanical gages are more accurate and reliable, but I hate 'em. P.O. put a mechanical oil pressure gage on mine and I can't wait to rip it out. I just don't like the idea of a tube under oil pressure going into my cab (or anywhere for that matter).

I had one in my truck, and when it was owned by my Dad before me it had a mechanical oil pressure gauge. Never had a single problem.
The accuracy, and reliability of a mechanical gauge makes them the choice for me. They take a little more time to install, but when done it is worth it. And wires will wear through just as easy if not ran, and secured properly.
Oh- Another gauge option is speedhut. I have been wanting to try them out. But I don't believe they sell mechanical gauges. They do have a cool GPS Speedo though! ;D

Sorry to jump in with question of my own but when you buy aftermarket gauges do they come with everything they need to work? If I wanted to put some in my 86 what other things would I need. Planning on purchasing a complete wiring harness as well.

I checked out the Speedhut site (thanks Altec - I might go with them) and the gauges come with sending units. They have 5 and 6 gauge packages. They let you customize their gauges any way you can imagine. USA made, thin, with a unique mounting system, I like!!
