Title: gap between box and cab
Post by: chadbice on September 11, 2010, 01:07:25 am
On my 84 silver 4x4 I have the normal gap on the left on the right side i have a gap of about 2 and a  half " . My question is...By loosening the box mounting bolts can the box be shifted at all to make the gaps even.  Or is my frame tweaked enough for this to happen?

My answers are Yes, and Yes.  Though first thing I would do is measure everything from cab to bed both sides, at the back of the bed to frame rails, and then measure x style across the frame in the back.  Then look at the bed and the way it is bolted up and see if you notice anything has shifted or moved.  Basically I would really look hard at finding the problem first before just trying to square it up again, might be something simple or something that should be addressed now rather than later.  Good hunting......Tom

On my 74 and 81 there is slotted holes where the bed mounts, you will get a little adjustment out of them....Tom

while you're at it you could slide the whole thing forward another 1"-1.5" to close up the gap a little more that is normally there. thinking about trying it out this winter with mine. just a thought anyway...

I elongated the holes on my 74 to bring the bed in closer to the cab.

x2 for slotting the holes to let it slide up more.

While running some twisty rutty logging roads yesterday, I watched down my side mirror as my bed was twisting.  Actually got a tad nervous and hoped that my bed would not touch my cab.  I surely wouldn't want it closer to the cab for fear of it making contact.  Food for thought on a 4x4 that might find some trails.

seen that before my uncle had a 70's gmc swb 4x4 that had cab to bed contact bad. he had a body lift on it, but the reason was frame crack by the gas tank. My dad put it on a lift and stuck a 2x4 between the cab and bed to keep em apart.

maybe some rubber bumpers, just in case.
