Ok I did a complete body off resto-mod "sort of" on my 87 chevy 4x4 truck. I have all the wires hooked up and when I hit the brakes the gauge lights come on and clearence lights light up and when I let off they go off. When I hit the left side blinkers all the outside lights blink with it. When I hit the right side just the right side works like normal. I cant figure out what it is and it has me stuck and ready to carry to a guys shop that fixed some wiring foes on a past truck."which I hate having other people work on my baby". any help will be appreciated and yea it has a 93' cummins 6bt/chevy nv4500

You really need to get your hands on a schematic??
-
Ive looked at the schematic four times now and thats how I found out the flasher was out. I replaced it and now had this problem everythings hooked up correctly just acts like a bad ground or something
-
If you checked the wiring diagram and everything is right then something is crossed wired or hooked up wrong. sometimes it's best to walk away for a day or two and then tackle the job again. My other suggestion would be to get a second pair of eyes on it. Sometimes you get so focused on 1 thing that you overlook something, or it's right in front of you and you can't see it. Happens to me at work sometimes......Tom

Sounds like a ground problem. Did you redo the wiring in the cab or anywhere?
-
Have you mixed and matched harnesses from different years? Is the steering column or from a different year?
Should be several grounds on the e brake bracket, one behind the left tail light, one from the block to the cab, one from the negative term to the core support above the right head light, and to the frame, one from the nose harness to the core support above the left head light. I'm sure i am forgetting a couple.

The only thing that i have done is put a new front clip and put a diesel gauge cluster in it. I havent messed with any of the wires inside. Today i tried messin with it and still no worky only the right signal works correctly. But still the same when hitting the brakes
-
Put the gas gage cluster back in and see if it solves the problem?
-
I swapped the diesel gauge in today. So that shouldnt be the problem cause they still dont work
-
Hmmm, I got nothin!
-
Check your grounds up front since you did take it apart. Did you change years with the front clip
-
I put a 85 front clip but used my 87 wiring harness
-
The part about the brake lights are stumping me but a bad ground will cause all sorts of problems
-
Do you have something else tied in to your brake pedal switch that shouldn't be? If the trouble starts when you hit the brakes I would chase that circuit and see what you find.
-
well guys I got a new problem. Since I have put a manual tranny I found a manual column and put that bad boy in there and guess what. MY PARKING LIGHTS WONT TURN OFF AND MY GAUGES ARE ON!! Ive tried everything on this dang switch and now Im really about to go kick the dented door on the parts truck... I have no idea whats goin on
-
Did you swap out the electronics on the column from the auto to manual?
What year column? The changed a few times.
-
its off a 87 chevy and all the wirings the exact same
-
Figured out why the brake lights and running lights were on... When i pulled the column brake light switch popped out so brakelights on and te same problem persists with when mashin the brakes running lights come on.
-
And now with messin with it all night i have brake lights that work right. And a right side blinker. The left side doesmt flash but comes up on the arrow. Also only the left side running taillight comes on no matter what i did to the right side even switched bulbs. Any ideas?

When I switch from manual to auto to tilt to manual with no tilt I've always had to grind the plug on the column to make it work right but usually it was a ground wire on the plug not making contact. But you problem has to be there
-
On the blinker plug?
-
Yup has to. I think ;D pretty sure
-
Mine fits pretty snug
-
Mine would to but the contacts wouldn’t be touching right had to cut a half shape moon out of one end and a corner off the other and shorten it. Not saying it is your problem but kind of sounds like it
-
Is the manual column from the same year truck? Every couple / few years the pin positions are different in the plug on the column, the gage cluster, the bulk head side of the fuse box etc. etc. All the problems you are describing sound to me like this could be the problem? For example, I have seen someone change a gage cluster, and just plug in the one with a factory tach. and nothing works correctly. I myself have swapped in a different year column, and had to pull the contacts out of the plug and reposition them in order to make directionals etc. work.
-
I would take mine out andshow you what I had to do. But I wont dare do that took me forever to get it to work right
-
My uncle was telling me about something like that with some kind of adapter plug for it. Ill check it out tommorow
