I was trying to change the door locks on my '85 today. I unscrewed all of the screws, took off the pull handle and all that, and basically had the door panel hanging there. The problem is, I try to pull up on it to get it out and it gets stuck at the top by the window. Is there a certain trick to this?
I managed to snake my arms through and change the locks without taking the panels off but I really would like to know how to do this in case I want to change panels or fix the window motors. Thanks.

I think its easier when the window is all the way down. Then the trim piece holding it in is easier to unhook.

Looks like I'll be leaving the panels on then, my windows don't roll down.

It is possible with the window up, I did it the other day. Once you have undone all the screws, including the ones that hold the door handle surround in place, just lift it up. You may need to use a bit of force. To check you've undone all the screws pull the panel away from the door at the bottom, you'll be able to make sure it's just the window seal holding it in place.

You have to pound it a little with the palm of your hand near the top of the panel--in toward the window and up. That unhooks it. I've never rolled the window down, although that probably does help.

X2
It helps to roll the window down but, same as you mine wouldn't. I had to change the regulator. The palm up near the top of the panel worked but I had to use real force. It wasn't easy at all. Now it pops out easily, you probly just need to give it a good whack

you can't push the window down? I think on my 88 with power windows I can push it down without using the power window motor or switch. I aint for sure though.

Dunno if you can and I wouldnt risk breaking the glass.

well I don't mean use alot of froce, just a little bit more then the weight of you arm some pushing, seems like mine didn't take alot, maybe I'm thinking of dad's manual setup?

Mine never budged except when the motor was disconnected.

I just grab the top of the door panel and pull it up. i stick my fingers between the glass and panel and my thumb on the inner side and pull it up. i have big hands though. ;D

I pull them out like Kenny posted. Don't be "gentle" with it.
