Title: Help with troubleshooting th350
Post by: bennyboyraptor on September 28, 2010, 08:55:49 pm
Hello everyone, this is my first post on this forum, great place to lurk, seems to have tons of info. But anyways I have a 84 El Camino with a mildly built 350 and a turbo350 tranny with a b&m ratchet shifter. I recently drove my el camino from Utah to Nevada, about 500 miles. before the drive I went through and did new spark plugs, belts and fluids. After about 150 miles i heard a slight ticking from the tranny and it disengaged, so i pulled over, checked the fluid and gave it a look over, discovered 2 of the bell housing bolts were loose. So i tightened them up and on i went. Made it another 100 or so miles and it did it again, put a bit more torque on the bell housing bolts and continued. This is when she started really acting up, about 300 miles into the trip i stopped for fuel, as i started my car to leave the gas station i could not get it to shift into gear, messed around with the b&m to no avail, so pushed it to a parking place and let it sit a few hours, after trying and trying i finally got it to find drive, started driving and quickly realized it would no get out of second, so i limped her in second (dont worry wasnt pushing it hard) and made it to the next big town where i limped to a napa garage, had the technician take a look at it and my timing was off, so he fixed that and managed it to find drive and shift some what normal (although tranny seemed a bit weak) So drove it another few miles til i was about 80 miles from my destination, stopped for gas and couldnt get it to find drive, or any other gear for that matter. After a while i was able to find drive and limped to my destination (shifted into all the gears) upon reaching my destination i parked it for a few weeks. Now here i sit trying to figure out whats wrong. If it sits for a good week or 2, it will start right up and find all the gears and shift perfectly, but as you drive it it progressively  worsens, after driving a few miles if you take it out of gear it wont find it again. I am thinking it has something to do with vacuum, but who knows. Sorry for the lengthy post, just wanted to proved clear information. Thanks

Could be something in your linkages for the b&m shifter my megashifterin my transam would act up sometimes also check your trans fluid level. When was the last time the filter and fluid was changed?

What you mean by not finding any gears? Will the shifter pop in place just nothing from the transmission

exactly, the shifter itself feels normal, it just wont engage into gear. And a full service will be the first thing i do.

i know sometimes with my b&m it would not ratchet right sometimes especialy when its cold. like i remember leaving work a few times last november/december and ratcheting it to 1st and id go to take off and it would still be in drive and would slowly creep and feel like it was slipping (car had a 3500 stall) then i would realize the prob and keep pulling back till it downshifted sometimes it took a few tries.

well i picked up a new flex plate and tranny filter, along with a case of fluid. So just a write up on pulling the tranny and changing the filter and fluid would be great
