Title: Photos of Trans Leak, any ideas?
Post by: PatrickJ on September 29, 2010, 12:09:45 pm
From my 78 GMC 2whl/dr Sierra, the trans is leaking, new seal, yoke is not wet, seems to be coming from inside the yoke and dripping out the universal joints. Prior to these photos I cleaned the area to make sure it was not migrating from around the seal, it is not.
Any ideas, it is the th350 automatic trans.
Thanks.

get some white lithium grease inside the yoke and cover up the weep hole.

You need a new O-ring. If you remove the driveshaft you'll see the o-ring

Coolio. did not know there is an O ring in there. Of course there would be. Duh on me, The local repair shop did my seal and did not mention or check for an O ring and I had mentioned the leak, this is why I had the seal replaced.
Thanks,
now, what the bejeebers is a weep hole. and lithium grease is always a good thing but do not see how this would stop the leak. Interesting reply tho. Thanks but would love to know what you mean. :-)

The weep hole is supposed to be there the vent the air from the plunging. http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/drivetrain/yokeleak.htm

Great! Learn something new everyday. I have the 2-piece drive shaft, so that part of the shaft does not plunge on mine so I just put a dab of the white lithium inside the yoke to plug the hole. Nice to know how I should have fixed it in case I ever go back in there again.

If you have an air tool/hoist or high pressure hydraulics repair shop local to you they most likely can match up
a new o-ring if you bring in the old one, and they might not even charge you for it.

Any reputable parts store will have an O ring selection. Just have them match it up.

Thanks again for the replies. Problem repaired due to your info. I did a quick fix and that entailed dropping the drive shaft, cleaning out the yoke, adding the grease and problem solved for now. When I have the time I will check further for the O ring etc.
I will have to lay the truck up while I get it out, take it for comparison and did not have the time or second ride at the time.
Here is a photo for those who like me had no idea what the weep hole was even though the name truly says it all.
