Title: Paint question
Post by: PhoenixFear on September 29, 2010, 05:37:02 pm
I tried looking for the trim tag on my truck everywhere, and it is nowhere to be found. I'm assuming it used to be in the glovebox because it looks like a sticker was removed in it. I tried calling Napa's paint department then called the Chevy dealer and they both couldn't really help me. Is there anything else I can do to determine this? I did some researching and came up with this link.
http://www.gmtruckhq.com/exterior-modifications/gm-paint-codes-2740.html
I'm assuming since this is a helpful list that shows many of the possible colors for the GM trucks. I don't know if the list is completely accurate or is missing information. However it seems that in 1985, there are only two reasonable possible choices for red (the color of my truck).
Red Orange 71/WA7753
Bright Red 72/WA7475
My truck definitely doesn't look red-orange, and Bright Red was seemingly used a ton of different years. Would it be safe to say I should just use this paint code? The only other thing I might run into is since I believe the truck was repainted that it might be a different shade of red. However on some spots of the truck, the newer paint is flaking off and the older paint looks exactly the same color. Thanks.

A 1985 truck would only have one red, Apple Red.  Any paint supply shop can look it up.

If you want to find the best match, pull up the carpet, or under the kick panels on the inside

Is Bright Red the same as Apple Red? Google obviously is only showing me candy apple red.
I'm thinking Bright Red is Duplicolor's name for it, possibly to avoid confusion. I looked up another paint website and they listed Bright Red and Cardinal Red, which Cardinal Red looks kinda like red-orange.

Decided to bite the bullet and bought the Duplicolor Bright Red stuff. Looks just like the truck, so I guess it matches.

Why are you looking for paint codes if you're using a generic Duplicolor paint?  The best you can do with that stuff is choose from their colors the closest match.

Pretty much you have to go by the code and not the name..   Names change every couple of weeks it seems like. ;D

Even on my truck the RPO sticker calls the color saratoga silver, but my build sheet calls it Med. Gray on the same truck at the factory, however they both have the same color code.

Then on the same build sheet, my interior colors are named as both Red and Firethorn on different parts of the sheet.

The problem I had was the fact that they had so many different shades of red, all GM colors. They had two different Bright Reds, a Victory Red, and some other red colors.

You will notice a difference in colors when you try and match a duplicolor paint with a factory paint.

When you say "they" I assume you mean Duplicolor has several gm shades of red?  It won't be a match anyway but I guess your best bet is to match up the name of the color like you were trying to.  If you paint your truck with this stuff please post something about it.  I don't have much faith in it but you might prove me wrong.

If you want factory paint, go to a paint store and have them look it up.

I tried Napa's paint department, they said call the dealer. I called the local Chevy dealer, they said there's no way to figure out what color the truck was without having the body shop physically look at the truck and match the paint. Maybe I should find an '85 paint chip chart and see what it is.
Here is a picture of what I painted. It already got scratched due to the tail gate but oh well.

The guy you spoke to at Napa is full of it, they should have a huge paint book that has chips for more colours than you can imagine.

Ditto.  BTW, that is 1985 Apple Red
