Title: Engine bay wiring question(s) (Pictures!!!!)
Post by: ITSANSS on October 02, 2010, 11:22:21 am
I think I'm finally gonna' get around to swapping my sister's old 350 c.i. engine for the rebuilt 355c.i. in the next week or so.

Got a question about some wiring in the engine bay.  I think when I have the old engine out, I'm gonna' do some cleaning up and painting.

There's a lot of wiring that I don't know what it is exactly and have a feeling some of it is not used.

Here are some pictures to better illustrate...

This is at the firewall on the passenger side, next to the transmission dipstick.  What is this plug that goes to this little black box on the firewall?  Also, it has a single wire or a small vacuum hose coming out of it.

This is in the same place as the first picture, below that black box with the plug and single wire/hose.  A few of these wires goes down to the starter, and some to the A/C/heater box, but there are a bunch of others, too.

This is the same place as the first and second picture.  This is a BIG jumble of wires that go down to nothing, with the exception of a few wires to the starter.

These wires are on the driver side near the windshield wiper motor.  Several plugs that are hanging loose, etc.  Is the box a ground for everything?  Is that where the wires go into the fuse box inside?

This wire is on the driver side, next to the steering gear box.  This single wire comes out of the headlight wiring and into what I have no idea.

Map sensor, unused, combination valve, and not sure what you're asking on the last one?

The plug by the steering column is where all the wires come out of the fuse box. One harness goes to the engine, one to the nose, one to the tail lights, and fuel tank. The one by the steering box is for your gage cluster brake light.

I like it when there is unused stuff in the engine bay.  Feels good to take stuff out and make it look purty.   :P  The last one I was just curious what in blazes it was.  And, according to Blazin, it's the gauge cluster brake light.  I'm not exactly sure what that means.  lol  Is it the light on the gauges for when the parking brake is engaged?  What a strange place to be...

Thanks

No he's saying that the one I said that's for the combination valve turns the brake warning lamp on when you lose brake pressure.

I still don't know what you're asking about the last picture? The small wire?

Yeah what he said, I said!!  ::)

Ok, I'm thoroughly confused now.  lol!!  The last two pictures is the same wire and same question.  What is it?  It comes out of the headlight wiring harness over into a single plug/sensor thing next to the steering gear box.  Is that the brake pressure thing you're talkin' about?

Hope that clears things up.  Hahaha

Thanks

If one of your brake lines blows lunch, that sender senses low pressure, it then tells the light on the dash to light up.

Alright, thanks for clearing that up and sorry for the confusion.  lol

To be clear, the first, second, and third pictures is MAP sensor and (mostly) related wiring that is not needed, correct?  I won't just go in willy-nilly and chop it all out, but for the most part it's likely to be unused, unneeded wiring?

Thanks, ya'll!

The wire goes to the bracket and if you look at where the wire goes it plugs into the combination valve. The combination valve has a differential pressure valve inside it. There is 12 volts applied to that circuit when the ignition is switched on. If brake pressure becomes unequal on either side of the valve due to a hydraulic leak the valve will move and contactact the metal housing creating a path to ground. The light bulb will then illuminate on the dash. Make sense?

Clear as mud.   ;D  Just kiddin'.  I understand fully now.  Thanks!!

Just makin' sure...

Took off work today and gonna' work on wiring and de-greasing.  Haha

Thanks

Ok, got some of the wiring unbundled.

Sorry for the horrible picture quality.  Please blame Apple.

Is this stuff I need?  There is a ground, and several connectors.  I believe the ground was hooked up, but the connectors were all under tape and split-loom conduit, unused.  As you can see, a lot of the wires have been cut and have no ends.
