Title: Jerry Cans
Post by: Grim 82 on October 04, 2010, 09:18:24 am
I have a couple of the steel 5 gallon jerry cans that are partially full of long expired gas and have surface rust inside. Has anybody had any success restoring a can like this? I have heard of a product called KREEM that coats the inside of the tank, but don't know how well it works. I was just cleaning the garage and was going to dispose of them, but if there is a cheap and easy way to make them useful again I would keep them around.

I think POR-15 makes some stuff you can re-do the insides with.

Theres some products out there based on sulfuric acid were you dip any metal object, leave it there a few minutes and it will get rid of the rust. Leaves them looking real good.

There are several companies that make stuff for this.  Think Vintage motorcycle gas tanks...
You should be able to clean them out and reuse them.

This is the POR kit:

Wasn't sure of the price on that stuff from POR-15. Look's like 2 more jerry cans in good shape may be cheaper! LOL!!!

Thanks for the replies

That's kind of what I'm thinking. They are about $50 a piece for new ones. You can buy just the sealer seperate from the kit though, so as long as I could get them clean it's an option.

Capt -by cleaning and reusing them do you mean without the POR sealer? I was thinking that if I sandblasted the insides and just cleaned them real good and kept them full of gas they would probably be ok.
Thanks

Is it scaly rust in it or just surface rust?  If it isn't that bad I would pour some acetone in it and clean it out and reuse it.

Throw them in the bonfire pit and light the match.

I at least have to keep them around for the zombie apocalypse ;D

It's just surface rust. I think they will come clean.
