Title: LS1 into a K20?
Post by: farmallgray on October 23, 2010, 02:15:04 pm
I'm kind of causally kicking around the idea of swapping an LS1 into my 79 K-20. I did a little searching on here and I can find are threads on putting them in 2WDs.

Has anyone done a 4WD?

It would be essentially the same thing. What kind of feedback are you looking for on it?

I guess I'm wondering about the transmission and transfer case for starters. Overdrive would be a nice addition. I'm also wondering about using the fuel injection setup, or converting it to carbureted. What are the options for the ignition system if I went carbureted?

For many years I had been planning on swapping in a 400 sb and have most of the pieces to put it together.
But I hear all these great  things about the LS1 and I'm wondering if it would be worth the extra work. It isn't a daily driver. I use it to pull a trailer and may do a little sled pulling with it when it's done.

Keep the fuel injection.  To me it's like 95% of the point in the swap.  I just finished putting a 5.3 Vortec from an 03 into my 1981 C10 and it's the best decision I ever made.  Mine's a 2 wheel though so I can't give any advice on the 4 wheel drive stuff.  Though I'd suggest geting the newer running gear (transmission/transfercase and whatever else) with the engine.  Like you said, there's the overdrive, plus then you don't have to worry about the mods to make an older tranny work with the newer engine.  If you have any questions feel free to ask me and I'll try to answer if I can.
