Hello all. My '78 Silv. short box has a problem. In turn, I have a problem. I locked the pass. side door and now I cannot unlock it(with a key or otherwise. Can it be slim jimmed?? or do I have to take the door panel off somehow!
Thanks all! Kelly

What happens when you try and pull the knob up? Is it stuck down or does it come up freely but not do anything? I've had to unlock my door tons of times, whether it be with a slim jim, clotheshanger, wire, you name it. I can tell you with experience that you'll save a lot of time and frustration by just pulling off the door panel and seeing what the problem is.

push the button in and then try the key.

Thanks Capt. I'll try that
Unofficial
The knob is stuck down and won't pull up.
Thanks, Kelly

Capt,
I tried what you suggested. No luck. I'd prefer not taking the door panel off. Any other ideas??

Well if you don't want to take the door panel off then you can get a slim jim from most auto parts stores...
Like I said though, it was a heck of a lot easier removing the door panel than using a slim jim to unlock it. Plus you have to realize that there's obviously a problem with the rods that move around to lock/unlock the door, so good luck figuring it out without taking off the panel.
-
Were you having any slight problems with the lock, knob, or button before this happened? If so, might be a starting point.
-
I think I just never had to take the panel off with out the door being open. might pose a problem I know when I worked at a junk yard someone wanted a door well it was locked and we didn’t have time to try and neatly take the panel off so I just grabbed it and started pulling it till it broke off one thing I hated about junk yard cars they were usually wet and smelled funny. Never did like touching something that I knew was wet and didn’t know from what

have someone pulling with slight pressure on the lock actuator when you release the depressed button. Is it shut solidly? Missing the striker bushing?
If that doesn't work, pull the panel and find out what is happening.
-
The door is shut tightly and not missing anything.
So, I should roll the window down, pull up slightly on the lock knob while de-pressing the door knob? AND try the key???
Thanks Capt!

roll window down, push the button in and when you start releasing it pull up some on the lock, if it doesn't move you will have to pull the door panel as it is bound, a slim jim isn't going to fix it.
-
operate the inside and then the outside handles as if you were going to open the door then try again with the key.
-
Like they said! Sometimes I have to pull the inner handle and pull up on the lock on the driverside of my truck to get out if I acidently lock it while I'm in it.
-
I'm thinking it has to do with the lock tumbler maybe its frozen up or something if you take the panel off and don't see anything wrong try to disable the lock cylinder

This is a common problem, it's the latch.
