Post by: lpapa15 on October 25, 2010, 01:54:08 pm: Has anyone replaced the side of a bed? I need to replace the entire side of my bed and i want to know how hard it will be knowing that there is welding involved..

Can the side of a shortbed 79 fit and swap with a shortbed of an 85?

Please help...

Post by: Captkaos on October 25, 2010, 04:41:26 pm: There are spot welds down the bed floor to the inner bedside. Hard depends on you experience, I would say it would be harder than say removing a rusty rocker.

Which side? Technically it should work.

Post by: onelow84 on November 21, 2010, 11:11:26 am: just took my passenger bedside off to replace the front panel and there were no welds. It took about two hours to take off the whole passenger side, clean and repaint where everything bolts together and replace the front panel and put the bedside back on. it was my first time doing this and the bed was on a lift not on the truck. pretty easy and straight forward job. hope this helps. also only needed a
phillips screw driver and 1/2 and 9/16 sockets on an air ratchet

Post by: Blazin on November 21, 2010, 11:59:41 am: The only welds should be the rear bed post where tailgate shuts. It has two spot welds at the base of it to the floor. Other than that the whole side unbolts from the floor, and front panel.

There should be two short welds right at the base of the rear post where it meets the floor just inside the gate.

Maybe it was 1 of my welds and it just didn't hold. I'm still in the learning stages with my mig.

Post by: Russ130 on December 02, 2010, 07:53:03 pm: I just did a wheel arch replacement on mine and it was welded in several spots along the wheel well. I also noticed mine is welded along the top inside the bed rail and near the tail lights as well. In the past I have pulled bed sides off and just had to break the welds on the post in the rear, however along with the bedside came the inner bed wall attached. So I guess it depends where you are getting your parts from, a junkyard will probably include the inner bed wall where a replacement side crash parts probably won't.
