1979 C20, rebuilt 350 stock qjet 4br rochester. I have the truck registered in globe and dont have to do emissions. The truck is from california and has 2 smog canisters and the a.i.r. pump. I removed the exhaust manifold and put headers on so i looped the smog pump, going to remove it. But, when I remove the pump I want to remove all of the other smog crap. The 2 canisters and unnecessary vacuum lines. I need to know what I can remove and not affect functionality.
-
Technically, removing ANY of that is a FEDERAL offense, and if you get spot checked when driving anywhere, you go to jail for long time....
The AIR pump helps your truck warm up faster and lowers emissions on cold starts.
The Canister keeps raw gasoline vapors from entering the atmosphere and keeps your vehicle from smelling like it has a gas leak...
Dunno why you'd remove items that make your engine run better and save your gas from evaporating away....
-
Emissions is not required in Globe, AZ and spot checks, etc are not done. I ran my truck with no mufflers for like 3 months and nobody said anything, even cops, The AIR pump is useless at the moment considering the fact I don't have emissions exhaust manifold. And the vacuum canisters are just in the way and causing irritating vacuum leaks.
-
Per Federal law, tampering or removing ANY Emissions equipment mandated for your model year. Federal law OVERRIDES state law.
Yes, you can drive your vehicle, and yes you have no emission tests...but you still have to pass a VISUAL inspection.
Also, removing your Cannister can cause wonderful issues like vapor lock....
-
I dont have to do any inspection. All I had to do was go to the DMV and register it. No inspection or testing required. And vapor lock is caused by the fuel getting hot and boiling before it reaches the carb. Not from lack of vacuum canisters. If I was going to get vapor lock, it would have happened already. But, my fuel line is not against any hot objects. So, I dont have to worry about vapor lock.

I seriously doubt he is going to get arrested and go to jail for a long time because he took off his a.i.r. pump and charcoal cannister. Who would he have to pass a visual inspection for? A cop? ???
I would too ditch the a.i.r. pump system and as far as the cannister I agree I would leave it unless this is a hot rod that you are neatening up the engine compartment for show reasons. You should document and save where everything goes in case you ever sell it to someone who is going to have to reg it in CA
-
Well, I honestly don't need the vacuum stuff, Its taking up space. And, like I said, I've had to fix a bunch of vacuum leaks because of them already. So, I'm trying to save myself the money of buying new vacuum lines.

Lets see...He takes it off...Next year they roll back emissions on his vehicle, he doesn't have the emissions- They impound his vehicle....or he gets a roadside inspection, They charge him, cite him and impound the vehicle.
Uncle sam has gotten very tricky with emissions. California rolled back the year after rolling forward, NC has a county by county emission..
Look at these

What do you mean "roll back emissions"? Globe, AZ does not require emissions testing on inspection for ANY vehicle of ANY year, make, model, type.
-
The most he should be is a inspection ticket well in MD at least saying you have to pass within 30 days maybe a fine. I'm running straight pipes and with a lift way above state limits and go threw check points and pass cops with no problem. Now lets say I blow by a cop with my open pipes then they will go after me

California, a few years ago made it so '76 and newer only had to have emissions...Then, a year or two later, they made it so '74 or '75 and newer. All those people who removed their emissions stuff then were screwed...
You may have no emissions now, but next year, or the year after, they may roll it back...Then you are screwed....
I'm not telling you not to remove stuff, but if you do, you can end up in a world of pain with a vehicle that gets scraped.

According to that link he's already screwed because he put the headers on, so he might as well ditch the rest of it. It's surprising to read how carried away they get with it as far as recurving your advance or "tampering" with idle mixture. They would have us all driving a Prius if they could.

unless he buys CARB headers ( I did)..
They have now made it illegal to add a2nd cat if you went to true duels) if the vehicle only came with one from the factory...
And YES, they are trying to make us all drive prius

Well, sadly, nobody has answered my question yet.
-
I won't recommend you doing anything one way or the other, but if simplicity is your goal you will need IMO at the bare minimum vacuum to your brake booster, HVAC, and vacuum advance at the distributor. Those are the only lines that I run on my pickup. I put a vented breather on the tank vent hose and removed the canister because mine was hashed. I don't use an EGR or any other emissions equipment.
*edit- I also run the PCV
-
Lol I wonder if you can get away with true duals then have a h pipe with one cat on it
-
A cat for the H? Lol

Where was your question?
-
I'd keep the PCV stuff too. It helps reduce sludge formation in the block, if I understand it correctly. I'd probably ditch the smog pump. It's big and ugly and I'm not convinced it does any earthly good. I would try to keep the EGR though. I don't think it really hurts anything and makes it less smelly for people driving behind you. It also helps to make your engine burn more cleanly and efficiently, which is never a bad thing.

Grim 82, Very helpful. Thank you.
Since I have no emissions testing, I have headers into glasspacks and dumped out a couple of inches in front of the fuel tanks, inside the frame rails, pointing at a 45degree angle towards the outside/road. Sounds great!
Vile, the question was 'what vacuum lines can I eliminate'.
Snooz, The pcv isnt a big issue to keep for me since its right next to the carb. And, the smog pump is definitely coming off, I'm just waiting on a belt without the pump. And the EGR is staying. Same as the pcv, its right by the carb. And it helps fend off detonation/pinging. And, there usually isn't anyone behind me (HAHAHA). So I'm not worried about that one.
Thanks guys. I only have 1 more question. There is a 3/8ths vacuum line next to my power steering lines and along the inside of my frame rail below my steering shaft. What are those for and are they important or necessary in any way?
-
Ohhhhhh wow. I just thought of one more fairly important question. What about the open vacuum ports that will be left on my carb??? :O
-
Parts store sell vacuum caps some have color some are black. They come in a variety pack you wana keep the pcv, brake booster and vacuum advance on the distributor all rest can be gotten rid of. You probably still have the egr so keep that one to.
-
Don't forget vacumn for the tranny if you need it too. Seems I recall all 3/4 ton and up were exempt from emissions back in '79 except of course California vehicles. That's why they never had gas mileage on the stickers they were EPA exempt. 1/2 ton is another story though.
-
I don't run the a.i.r. pump, egr, canister or cats and I am a free man.
