Title: problems with new carb!!
Post by: ncguy89 on November 18, 2010, 04:22:07 pm
hey guys its been a while since iv been on here but i got a problem with a new ride. i bought an 84 k10 swb about 2 weeks ago and the edelbrock carb took a crap on me so i went and bought a new holley street avenger carb for it. now the problem i am having is i can be driving down the road and it will pop back through the carb and act like its flooding out. the only way i can get it to straightin out is if i floor it for a few seconds and it will clear up. also when i cut it off it will diesel sometimes like the carb is out of adjustment. now the only thing i have not done is hooked up the electric choke yet because im still trying to find a switched 12V power source since the previous owner made way with the old wires. idk if this could be my problem or not but i would like to get it figured out asap as i wanna drive it. can someone help me figure this thing out? thanks in advance!!!

Timing sounds like it is off.

Did you check the float settings?  Also is this a stock engine or modified?

i did check the timing and its set at 8 degrees btdc thats what the factory gm service manual said set it at! i havent touched the carb settings its just like it was when it came out of the box. its a stock engine.

also i need to add that it did not do this with the old edelbrock that was on it. only with this carb. could it be that i dont have the electric choke hooked up? could that cause it to do this?

Setting the idle mixture and ensuring that you have no vacuum leaks is a good start. Get your choke hooked up. Finish a proper install on the carb and then troubleshoot from there.

I'd at least get the choke hooked up. Sounds like you're loading up with fuel.

I have never installed a new Holley from the box that did not need adjustment. Sounds like your float level is to high, and also you have to adjust your air idle mixture screws.

Agreed set the float levels and idle mixture too. You will also have to swap the vacumn secondary spring with the black one that came with the carb.

i appreciate all the help. now where would be the best place to run a switched 12V power supply for the chokes hot side? also does anyone have any tips on setting the float level and mixture screws?

Get an oil pressure switch and wire that from any 12 volt source to your choke. Float level is adjusted with the sight plugs out, just adjust it till the fuel just barely starts to come out of the sight hole. Idle is done to highest vacumn reading.

ok guys, iv spent about all day trying to adjust this carb. i hooked up the electirc choke, swapped out the secondary spring, and checked all over for vaccum leaks. and still nothing. so i figured i would adjust the floats so i done just like the manual said and turn the nut on top of the fuel bowl while i held the screw with a screwdriver clockwise and i have yet to see fuel through the hole. it stalls when under pressure andd i give it gas slowly but i can put it in drive and punch it real fast and it will rev and jump like it is suppose to. idk what else to do. i have never messed with a holley and i cant get this thing right.

So just when under a load it stalls

You need to turn it counterclockwise as if you were removing it. Turning it clockwise is setting the float lower.

ok guys i havent had time to mess with the truck anymore until today. so this is an update of what i have done!! i have adjusted the floats, hooked up the electric choke, set the idle mixture screws with a vaccum gauge. now the carb is adjusted to the best of my knowledge. now the problem i am still having is the truck will pull its own wieght on flat ground but going up a hill or in my case pulling it on a trailer as soon as i touch the throttle it will pop and cut off.  it will not pull itself up a incline what so ever or better said it wont pull under a load. im guessing maybe the timing is still off? or maybe its something ignition?

Sounds like it's running lean or your timing is retarded. Do you have a timing light?

i do but since i cleaned the timing tab last time it has surface rust and i cant read it anymore so i will have to clean it again with a wire brush or something.
