was wondering if anyone had an idea what would make my truck run rough when its cold and it back fires a couple times after i start it , but after idling for about 5 mins it smooths out and is fine! could it be the egr valve?

The problem with EGR systems is most commonly caused by the GR solenoid sticking allowing vaccum to apply the EGR. you don't want the EGR open at idle even just a little bit. A simple way to determine if this is the problem is to unplug the vacuum source at the EGR valve.
