Hi guys I installed a 6 inch lift in my 1981 k5 jimmy and I ran into some problems My rear drive shaft has a way to big of an angle for my liking and my front drive shaft is just barley long enough to reach the front axle Il be dropping the transfer case an inch or so to try help this. whats the most I can drop the transfer case with out hurting anything? and what have you guys done that have installed a 6 inch lift to fix these problems thanks marc.

Not sure but you could try to put spacers on the trans cross member About an inch. Never heard about it being that bad but what tans and transfer case you running? Also take some pics

Use a 1" spacer between the frame and crossmember and see how it is.

This is the set up I used.
It's from Rancho if I remember correctly.
Paid $50 at the local speed shop cause I wanted it that day. Look around on line and you can find a cheap set up, or make one yourself.

the combo im running is 350, 350, NP208 to a GM 12 bolt rear end. OK il try a one inch spacer on the transfercase and see what happens

You can also get a spacer for your front driveshaft

Well guys I have talked to a bunch of the local wheelers around me and every single one said Dont do a tranfer case drop unless ya wanna go through trannys. This makes sense because when you drop your transfercase your tranny is now on an angle and the tranny filter is near the front of the pan so there is a very high possibility for them to blow due to not getting enough fluid. Any one heard a this before. So my new plan is to drop the motor mounts 1-2 inches as well as the transfer case to keep everything factory again

I have heard of lots of people with a 6" lift, but I have never heard of anybody lowering their motor mounts to make it work. How extreme of an angle are you talking about?

its pretty extreme i think, and im not blowing through u joints. its on an 81 k5 blazer so is got a real short wheelbase Also as soon as I flex the rear the wheels my drive shaft is sooooooo close to fallin out a the transfercase its not even funny. and I would rather lower the motor mounts as well as the transfer case to keep everything level and keep my drive shaft angles low.

I wouldn't be worried about lowering the t-case an inch or so. If your driveshaft was longer and you had more of the yoke in the case the angle would decrease. It sounds like you just need to drop it that inch and then have new shafts made. I bet you'll find alot of play in the yoke, and that the t-case rear seal leaks now too. Post up a pic of that angle and the yoke if you can.

So its not binding just seams to short. You can sling the springs around and that will make up 2 or so inches

That's ridiculous! What happens when you go up or down a hill? Does your trans blow up? Don't listen to whoever told you that. Put the spacer in and make a mark on the shaft slip yoke with the suspensionfully extended Then measure it.

Put a deeper pan on it with the pickup tube extension?

I wouldn’t worry about the trans like vile said think of when you launch a boat of the ramp that’s more of a angle than one or two inches will do

Probley wouldnt hurt to put some degree shims under those rear spring packs. But i personaly would get new shafts made in the future. Any kind of wheeling with those yokes streatched out like that is asking for trouble.

Easy fix flip the rear springs so the rear of he springs is facing forward. It will make up for the space

This happened to my buddy's '90 full size. He only put a 4 inch on it though. He backed over a curb one day for whatever reason and BANG, input yoke broke. Drove her home in 4wd using the front wheels. Lost some tranny fluid but got her home. I thought it was quite funny haha.

ok guys thanks for the tips il try flippin the springs since I need new rear springs any way see how much that helps. Just a real quick question if I end up gettin new drive shafts made up how do I measure the length the new drive shaft is gonna be ???.

You put the yoke in where it should be look at the wear marks on the shaft. and measure center to center where the u joints should be
