Title: Buddy's overhaul
Post by: Buddy on November 20, 2010, 07:16:58 am
I have no idea if I am doing this right but i think this is the links to my truck. let me know what you guys think. This is my first rebuild, learned pretty much everything from this site. It is almost done. I am about 75%. I have alot of parts and things bought that just haven't been installed yet.

I would have never quessed that truck had that kind of a rust problem--it looked good in the pictures from May.  You have been busy!  Very nice work.

ha ha me neither Bud. I found rust everywhere. Every body panel is new. I was lucky with the box, when I had it blasted there wasn't a hole to be found. I couldn't beleive it. I had to replace to two step fenders as well. I was also impressed with the frame when it was back from the blast shop not a hole anywhere. When you live where I live RUST and road salt are just the way it is in New Brunswick Canada,

I really wish I'd seen your truck before I started restoring mine.  When my body man first looked at my fleet side bed he told me he knew a guy that had a good stepside bed we could get for free, which would save me a ton of money in labor and parts.  I turned him down because I really wanted to keep my truck as original appearing as possible.  Now that I've seen what you're doing with your truck, and I've had to invest in a complete bed skin and a new tailgate that I hadn't planned to replace I'm really regretting my decision not to go stepside. Your truck looks great!

Is there any part of the old fleetside bed that is salvageable?  Those tail lights with the correct little chrome trim around them sure look nice... :)

thanks guys,
As far as the fleetside goodies. I sold every part there was. It helped to pay for the other things I had to buy.

Glad to hear you say that, sometimes you can loose site of the project. There was more than a few times I thought what the heck am I doing. So far I am glad I have stuck with it, I can tell you the finishing details are taking awhile and it is hard to get everything just right. Cant wait to get it painted in the spring.

Nice project, though it seemed you started out with a step side and ended with a fleet side.  Did I miss something ?

No, I started out with a fleetside than to a step side. Pictures are in reverse order. The last one is the first day I brought it home.

how did you go about repainting your door panels?

if you click on the picture I think you should be able to see the write up at the bottom explaing each one.

As far as painting my door plastic.....all I can say is it was a project. i tried everything to get this to work. I frist cleanded them with a scrub bruch with soap water spray 9 and anything else i could find. I than tried to paint them , no luck would stick. At the end of the day the only thing that worked was to go buy some grease and wax remover and wash it down with that about 3 times. than I took some very very light sand paper and scuffed them up and applyed some plastic paint to them. I tried the the automotive stuff but found the stuff in the hardwhare section 10 times the paint. cant remember the name but I know it was for platic and started witha K stuff worked great

they don't look to bad in the pictures, ill have to try that with them. the ones on my 80 silverado are faded out and dry rotted, so i may try that some time and see how they look, or i may go to the junk yard and find some off a wreck.

The picture doesn't do it justice. The bed looks a little out of wack because there are no rails or wood installed, it is just sitting on there. I have done a ton of work to this truck complete rebuild from frame up. I have never had anything painted before. My body guy comes very highly recommend. I am nervous for sure, I am hoping all my work will pay off. I having a hard time seeing it in my head. I keep looking at every flaw and thinking I hope can fix this I hope he can fix that. I am just so nervous I cant get over it. My body man tells me not to worry he says everything wrong is all easy fix doesn't seem to sweat anything. He is doing a complete demo painting the cab bare and all fenders and doors off etc. he tells me he will have it for about 2.5 weeks.  I have a ton of money in this thing even though it doesnt look like it from here.

Keep us posted. I'm sure it will turn out even better than you imagined. Green will look good on that truck.

2.5 weeks seems pretty optimistic, just be sure to stop in often and right before the paint to look for flaws before it is sprayed and ask questions, be sure you are on the same page. Allow extra time if needed, you don't want him to rush.

X2 on the rush part.  Make sure he doesn't feel pressure from you to get it back.  But do stop in and ask questions, just keep telling him to take his time, (as long as he is working on it) you will be glad you did.  Let us know how it turns out with pics.

I know how you feel. I just sent my daughter's car off to be painted after repairing it from a rollover. I heard promises to paint it from a friend for all of last summer and it never happened so I sucked it up and did most of the work myself. After it being in my way for almost a year I am excited to get it home. I had to force myself not to go to the bodyshop everyday...haha I did go today and saw it in color with no clear yet but couldn't stay to see it with clear. Tomorrow we will flatbed it home.

I personally know the painter so I wasn't worried about his abilities, just as you said I was worried that I did a good enough job on my end. I am happy with my little project so far and I am sure yours will be perfect in the end too.

Keep us posted.
