I have an 86 Silverado with a 4 speed, 4wd and was wondering how hard it would be to fix the return springs that keep tension on the shifter?

Not sure what you mean by return springs? Is it popping out or falling out of gear?

I was wondering the same thing. Is he talking about the clutch pedal springs?

I believe this is about the spring on the bottom of the shifter. (this would fix a noisy/vibrating shifter.)
to remove your shifter, remove the shift knob by turning back the lock nut and spinning off the knob. Then remove the shift boot covering the base of the shifter. then use a channel lock and twist the round metal piece counter clock wise about an inch or so and pull up and remove it. then you will see two rollpins below where that metal piece came off of, use a punch to remove them from the inside out. and pull up on your shifter. You then should see what you need to do to replace them. reinstalling the shifter is the reverse of this. btw you may also want to check into some new bushings or whatever else is in the shifter that could be worn. when I did mine I only replaced the shifter as i found a chrome one at the u-pull-it, but once the shifter is out I can't imagine it is too hard.
btw, almost forgot, set your park brake and put the trans in neutral before you do this.

yes that is what I meant the shifter was making some noise and vibrating and someone said it was something in shifter

Also, when you pull out your shifter, also inspect the ball-shaped support that is factory tack-welded onto the shift lever; this support shifts just below the tension spring. The tack welds that hold these on are could be broken. Also if you missing one of your roll pins that hold the shifter in place; this would give the same symtoms that you are having as they hold the spring and ball shaped support into the cup inside of the transmission.
