Title: Will a turbo 350 hold up behind a mild 454?
Post by: fitz on November 28, 2010, 09:05:14 am
Has anyone run a Turbo 350 tranny behind a mild big block?
I plan to replace the blown up SB 400 TPI motor in my stepside this winter and 1 of my options is a 87 454 TBI motor. I'm still not sure if I would keep the TBI set up or run a carb (I've been following 77C10Diesels thread on carb vs. TBI).
Just wondering how my Turbo 350 tranny will hold up. It's been rebuilt and has a TCI shift kit installed.
The rest of the set up consist of a 205 transfer case (new bearings), SF rear end with 4:10 gears (Yukon gears Eaton posi) and 35" tires.
I don't plan to beat the truck to death.

Should be fine as long as you don't beat on it and the 350 has been rebuilt.  The 350 is a dang strong tranny.

I run a TH350 with a shift kit in it behind my Caddy 500 in my '82 K2500. I flog on it daily and often tow an 8000 lbs trailer and have never had an issue. It has lasted longer than the 3 previous TH400's. You will be ok.

Years ago I had a 74 Malibu that had a mild 454, with a built TH 350. Hammer it it would leaveabout 20' of rubber going into 2nd, and about 6' into 3rd. It lived behind that motor for two years. I wailed on it allot.  Its still in my Blazer behind a strong 350 as I write this. I bought it used out of an 85 C 10 with a 5.7 HO Camaro motor in it.
