Title: 1979 Steering Column
Post by: I_am_fishbait on November 30, 2010, 08:13:25 pm
Here's the deal, I bought a 79 C10 that the original owner blew the tranny and parked it in a gas station parking lot till he could get a tow. Later that night, some genius tried to steal it. In doing so he totally screwed up the steering column. I have come to find out that apparently in 79 they had a specific three piece column and have a square or D (i can't remember which at this moment) also none of these seem to exists were I live. I have been given a couple that were supposed to be the correct one and even bought one that wasn't correct. My question is can I just get a coupler that will adapt the spline ended column to the steering box that was in the truck? If so where can I get it?
Thanks,

Do you mean the part between the end of the steering column where it sticks through the firewall and the steering box?

For now look into a standard column thats not tilt and then totally rebuild the tilt one..It be cheaper i think if you do that and you dont have to worry bout it till its done and rebuilt.I had a 82 column that had more play in it then 100 kindergartens in a school yard on a sugar rush and there is a guy that`ll take it and rebuild it for you and its better then new...I got to find the link but  its worth a try.

thanks

Why not remove the thru-bolt and seperate it where the column sleeves onto the steering shaft, by the firewall?
