Title: My Spare Tire Carrier
Post by: Da67goatman on December 09, 2010, 02:53:12 pm
Since my 33s don't fit in the factory spare tire well, i needed to find another way to carry a spare.  I was at the junkyard the other day and did a little research on the Van tire carrier, and thought I can do that and it would look original.  So I had my plan now to execute it.  Went to my local steel supplier and got a piece of 1" round tube and some 3/16" plate.  Got 3 wheel studs from my local parts store and some stainless fasteners.  Will include pics as I go.

Sounds like a great idea, I'd like to see how it turns out.

That's pretty cool. Is it going to swing seperately or attach right to the door?

It will swing with the door, but be removable.  Here's where I'm at.

Update:  Its all welded and prepped for paint.  Try fitted and it fits great.  Should have it bedlinered later tonight.

Here's the finished product.  Yes that's my 5th rim it just needs some rubber.  It has that black crinkle look to it from the bedliner.

Looks great, will the tire block the tail light?

It won't unless I go to a 35" or larger tire, and then it would hit the other door not allowing it to open.

I couldn't wait any longer, I still don't have the last piece, but I do have pics.  From the back and from the inside.

I got the last piece today.  Its a 2x2x1" Magnet.  It holds 246lbs of dead weight.  this is what will hold the carrier to the door.  Pretty slick no? ;)

I had to put a hotch in the magnet so I can pry it off stuff.  Here's a shot of it in action.

You may want to upgrade that.  Your tire is going to have more pulling force when you are accelerating.

I had to get one that I could still manhandle, almost lost a finger putting the notch in it.  And I think it will be fine, I can pull it off, but it take some force, I'm confident in it.
