Title: 3 speed manual to Turbo 350 auto
Post by: farrisrocks7 on December 12, 2010, 10:51:33 pm
I am thinking about swapping out my manual 3 speed(on the tree) to a turbo 350 auto in my 80 chevy stepside.  Just want to cover my bases.  Please correct me if I am wrong but I'll need to change or add the following:
Radiator
Trans cooling lines
Carb Kickdown
Flywheel/Flexplate
Crossmember
driveshaft
Now, will I also have to change out my steering column or will my 3 speed shifter work??  If so, how hard is that?
Thanks in advance!

You need a radiator with the cooling in it and lines.
The crossmember will work.
Driveshaft should work also if the TH350 is a short tail.
You have to disconnect the shift rods off the column, but I have heard people using them.  I would swap it out.

Will I have to move the crossmember?

Don't forget to remove the pilot bushing from the end of the crank.

No the cross member location is the same when using a short tail shaft TH350.  The drive shaft is the same as well
