I have read several things saying that a 4 inch lift on a 80's Suburban will clear 35's and not have any problems. Most of the the lift companies state that a 6 inch lift is required for 35" tires. Any Suburban owners have any first hand information on this? Any pictures of a 4" lift with 35's? or 6" lift with 35's?

Depends on the wheels that your gonna use.
4" lift,Factory 15x8 , Yes, 35" would fit.
15x10 with a negative offset, will need to trim the fenders.

I've put 35"s with 4" lift and no triming nor would I trim the fenders personally (don't like that look)
