Here is a link to my build page:
http://acefoxx.com/Restoration/Restoration.htm (http://acefoxx.com/Restoration/Restoration.htm)
I have an 84 GMC stepside. It was originally a 6.2L diesel. The 6.2 was long gone when I purchased it almost 8 years ago. This build is 2 yrs in the making now, on a very low budget. The only thing I haven't done myself is the machine work on the engine. It has a 406 sbc casting number 509. TCI TH350 Street fighter and a 14 bolt 5 lug rear end out of a 91 454 SS with 373 posi.
Before I took it apart I was doing 12.98 in the 1/4 mile with stock suspension. I have since upgraded to a 4 link rear suspension slightly bigger cam. Also upgraded from hyd flat lifters to solid rollers and electric water pump. Any weight I managed to save in the build I countered with nicer seats, centere console and new wood in the bed. You can see all my photos on the restoration page and my facebook page...http://www.facebook.com/album.php?id=100000502380470&aid=50 (http://www.facebook.com/album.php?id=100000502380470&aid=50)

I don't know what to say...that's awesome. You've got good taste. I love the dash and the color blue you chose, and I love that you did this on a budget.
-
I am not usually a step side fine but yours is a work of art, nicely done. BTW I see this is your first post so I want to Welcome you from NW Indiana...
-
Welcome and cool truck!

Welcome! truck looks awesome

Welcome, cool truck

Your photo-documentary of the restoration is hugely helpful and inspirational, thanks for sharing!
-
Very nice photo album, keep up the great work
-
I'll tell you what, I got alot of good ideas for my truck from your build. Keep up the good work!
-
Thanks guys, I have always been a stepside fan. When I started this build I wanted to do something no one has seen before. I have found very little on the web of ppl customing out these trucks. Same old tired dashboard and typical tail lights in the roll pan. I hope you guys get some good ideas from this and I hope to see some go into use. As soon as I get back from this deployment I will get back to work on it. I hope to have it back on the drag strip in Febuary.

Well I did it. I ordered my Powerjection+Plus today. Hopefully have it by early next week.

-
Please fill us in when you get that going! I'm kind of intriqued by that system myself, but I'm still a little hesitant.
-
Well unfortunately they aren't producing the system I linked above. I had to settle for the same system minus the spark control. Just means I have to manage my own timing. Woop-de-do. I got the system home today and it is an impressive looking unit in person. Comes with everything cept the fuel lines. I got the non-returnless system.(Yeah had to think about that as I typed it) So I have to run a return line back to the tank. No big deal. I have a connection on the top of my custom made fuel cell for this anyhow. I'll have to go pick up a hose tomorrow and route that back to the cell. I'll get the batteries charged up on the camera tonight and I will document every step for you guys. This system is going to be used at the drag strip so I will have to learn how to tune. It comes with all the software and wires to hook it up to my laptop. Should be a fun experience.
-
Lookin good!
-
Man that truck is slick 8)
-
What did you use to make that center console? That thing looks slick!
-
I made the box itself out of MDF 1/2 and 3/4 in. I covered the inlay with vinyl. I painted the box with Lowes brand textured spray paint close to the color of my interior. I then sprayed over that with Lowes brand spray paint that matched the interior perfectly. I made the template in the truck with some cardboard then just jigsawed it out on the MDF. Few brad nails from my little nail gun and then the paint. The top of the box for the arm rest/compartment was some foam cushion from the fabric store covered in the same vinyl I did the dash and inlay with.
-
Well I ordered my one piece windows kit and the flush mount back window today. Can't wait to get them in. I had a technical difficulty last week when I was testing driving old blue with the new PowerJection III system freshly installed. Turns out I am not that great a welder. The 4 link to frame bracket popped right off with my new found responsiveness from the fuel injection system. LOL Few cargo straps and I pulled the rear end back in place and drover her home. I'll get her fixed tomorrow morning for another test drive.
-
why didn't you order them from me? Could have save you a couple bucks.
-
Hey man :) Hows that Powerjection III working out for you? It looks like a cool little gadget. Was it really as easy to install as the Company makes it seam?
-
Well installation had its pitfalls. First off I had to redo my fuel lines a bit. My old fuel pump was forward on the frame. I had to cut and reinstall the braided -an fittings so I could mount the high pressure pump closer to the tank. That took me most of the first day. Wiring seemed easy enough. Battery, switch, tach and it has it's own built in fuel pump relay so it had a wire for the fuel pump power also. Installed the O2 sensor bung, the strap on type. I'll weld it when I upgrade my exhaust later. And lastly the temp sender in the intake manifold. I then had to install a return line to my fuel cell. I just used some fuel quality rubber line for that. Now for the problems:
1. The O2 bung was missing the gasket that was advertised with the kit.
2. When I barely started bolting down the throttle body itself the corner cracked. Yes the half inch thick billet bolt flange cracked. It didn't crack all the way through so I pressed on just to hear it start.
3. I turn the key for the first time and the fuel pump comes on for all of half a second. DOA.
At that point I had about 9 hours into the job and went to bed. I got up the next morning and in less then 30 mins I had it all packed up and back in the box. After a 3 hour round trip run to Summit Racing I was back at the house and in less then an hour I had the kit installed again. The second kit had inspection sheets in the box that showed someone did a QA on it before sending it out. The first kit didn't have that.
So it took several tries and I still couldn't get the thing to start. I turned the key and waited for the fuel injectors to squirt. Then I tried to turn it over. It would kick over for a second and then die. This went on for an hour. I finally called the Tech support(very helpful and friendly guys btw). After him hearing what it sounded like trying to start over the phone he deduced that the problem was my source for the switch wire was being interrupted during cranking. I had used the choke wire. He instructed me to move it to the pos side of the coil. After that it started right up.
I am still having problems with cold starts. I have to find time to get out there with Tech support and adjust(with the laptop) the IAC valve and the idle itself and the richness on cold start settings.
But on a final note. It runs like a scalded cat down the roads. So much so that I popped the weld on my four link and almost lost my rear end down the road. A few cargo straps and I drove it back home and drilled and bolted it back together.

Dang that sounds like a horror story. Hope the 2nd one works out for you :) Hey man im thinking about painting my chassis and engine bay. what did u use on yours? It looks really nice.
-
I used a little bondo to fill in some of the unused holes in the fire wall. Then I just painted it just like I did with the rest of the body. I used Nasons paint. It is made by Dupont I believe. I used professional grade simi gloss rustolium for the frame.

Where did u get the Glass' hood ? Ive been searching for a company that still makes fiberglass hoods for theese trucks with no luck ... Do u know if they make the older style hood out of glass too ?? Thanks ... let me know
-
I sent you a PM on it cause I don't quite understand what vendors I can list out loud and which ones I can't?
-
I have a 73-80 fiberglass cowl hood and can't give the thing away. I would go with a steel all day long.

http://www.usbody.com/
Chris probably has sources too
-
harwood fiberglass as well, they make nice stuff
-
Well I finally got a starter that doesn't drag, grind, whine, or chatter. I didn't even have to put in any shims. Almost 10 years with this truck and that has never happened.
Anyhow. I am finally starting to see some progress with the Powerjection III unit. Tech guy told me to plug my IAC valve hole and adjust the butterflies till it will idle then unplug the IAC. I am to do this cold before the adaptive learning kicks in at 150 deg temp. I did this and it starts right up now. Tomorrow I'll change out the thermostat to a more appropriate temp(165 deg is way to low for this motor) and then I'll plug laptop in and play with the computer settings a little bit.

I wonder how bad the shipping would be, I'd take it off yer hands Vile!
-
Truck freight for mine was like $112.

So I have had this annoying oil leak from my fuel pump block off plate because of a broken bolt. I had tired to drill it out in the past and broke the drill bit. So I just left it and tried to seal it real good.
Well that didn't work. The more I drove it with this Royal Purple in it, the more it leaked. So I got up this morning and did this....

I have it all back in now. I noticed what might be a leak on the radiator so I am running it down to my guy tomorrow to have it sealed up. Then I need to pick up some new spark plugs from that big store up the road in a town I call summit.
-
I like how spontaneous it seemed that you woke up and pulled the engine. Im sure it was much easier to get the bolt out with the engine removed.
-
I wish I lived that close to summit, im about 4 hours away from the Reno store.
-
I ended up ordering a set of Scott's performance wires from a speed shop here in GA. They cost me $105. I got the idea from someone here in the forums. I also think I seen a small leak in my larger then life radiator. I have had it repaired once already. I ordered an aluminum one rated up to 900 hp. Hope to have it and the plugs in this week. Windows will be here Friday. Then I need an alignment and continue tuning the Powerjection system. It was running pretty good, but it seemed to starve a bit at certain rpms. And it backfires really bad when I decel. I'll have to get with the tech guy again.
-
Looks like you had a nice little exhaust leak at the back of the number 6 cylinder.
-
yeah just a simple re-torque of the header bolts fixed that. I reinstalled these aluminum crush style reusable gaskets Sunday. They were a pain in the butt to get started cause the header bolts aren't excessively long. I had to use a slightly longer header bolt to get it started then switch it out for the correct ones. We'll see how they work out once I get it started. I am on hold right now while I wait on my new radiator, plug wires and windows.
-
Got my wires in. Ordered them Monday and got them Tuesday. Not bad turnaround. My aluminum radiator will be in next Monday.

I drove the 108 miles to the bi-annual swap meet down in Moultrie GA. Picked up a some mirrors I think will look good on this build and some better quality headers then the ones I'm running now. Larger, thicker tubes and thicker plate.

-
I have those mirrors on my truck. I like the look, but cant see much out of them....Just warning you. Did you get the base mounts with them?
-
Yeah I got the base mounts. These aren't the same as the ones you see in the not allowed to mention catalog. These are stock replacement 86-69 camaro reproductions. I'll be able to use the driver one I'm sure but the passenger one will prolly be just for looks.
-
Ya those have rounded edges. Very similar anyways. Even the DS is a pain to see out of.
Nice looking headers, brand??
-
Wysco brand headers. The feel really nice. Thick tubes and flange. Got them for $200 even.
-
Got my radiator in the mail today. Just need to run by and get some new 1.15" hose to adapt my SS flex hose's to it. And I also need to figure out the rubber mounts. they don't quite fit it right. The brackets up top are too tall so it doesn't pinch the radiator like it should. The radiator can fall right out.
-
I have that same radiator. I had some single bulb seal that I layered on the top and bottom to take up the slack. It worked perfectly. I also added a little on the front so it wouldnt rub against the core support and the lip of the radiator plate. You can get the seal in the weatherstrip section of a store or go to a place that sells camper shells. They will have it.
-
Did you get the fans as well? Check out my post...

-
hey man did u buy a kit for your 4 link and coilover set up or did u make it?
-
I got my four link as a kit. They are called fat bars. Several sites carry them. I paid the extra for the billet coilovers.
I didn't get the fans cause I have an aluminum fan shroud I built that I can adjust to fit.
-

That top radiator support... Does it actually hold the radiator or is it just a cover? Mine has two separate brackets that dont fit right. I was considering buying the chrome version of the one on your truck.
Sent from my DROIDX
-
That ribbed part on top of the radiator, that holds it down and bolts to the core support. It had a big block radiator from factory because it had a 400. I know in 79 they had two different size radiators, I got the bigger one. Id go to the junk yard first and get one like mine to see if it will work. Chrome dont get you home...
-
Ace, your truck is a 81-up, Beasties is 80 down, the core support brackets aren't the same.
-
Good catch Capt
-
ah yeah, thanks. I guess I just need to put some spacers under the poly mounts.
-
What are you going to use?
-
I only need to fill 1/2" tops. I'll prolly get some dense rubber stock or a phenolic block or something and afix it to the bottom mounts.
-
Very nice build...
-
Just saved your build page to my book marks. Some say emulation is the finest form of flattery. Well done dude.
-
haha, thanks, I appreciate that.
-
why didn't you order them from me? Could have save you a couple bucks.
Man now I am wishing I had ordered from you. I didn't know you sold the flush mount back glass. The company has been giving me the run around for two weeks. I ordered them 3 weeks ago to the day and they can't give me a straight answer on where they are if they have shipped or not or even having all the parts in stock to put in the box. They have caller ID and aske me if they can call me back and never do. I would love to get this thing on the road for cruise in and race season.

Threaten to cancel your order. Maybe the company will magically find the status of your order. Id get a tracking number too. If not, cancel your order and keep an eye on your credit card statement. Most credit cards will help their customers (YOU).
-
Who did you order the kit from?
I know the rear glass was on hold for all order as FedEx broke almost everyone they shipped, OPP had the boxes corrected now.
I generally have at least 3 kits in stock to ship out. I had them hold my back glass order as I didn't want to receive it broken.
-
I ordered it from opp. Ben finally called me back last night. The back glass had chips. They get more in tuesday. They claim my side windows are out for shipping. The tracking number has shown no progress since february 3. It got held up because the kit was missing some brackets. Fedex is worthless on their tracking. Last few things I got from fedex did update the tracking til it was at my door.
-
Really like the tailgate latches...nice tight look.
-
Well the weather is reasonable today so out to get some work done on the truck. I actually got her out on the road last night to the cruise in. Today I'm going to get my new headers installed, mount my new mirrors and start work on repainting my door panels. Il post pics as I'm working.
-
Got my headers installed today.

So I took the truck out for a test drive to show it off at my friends house. I got less then a quarter mile from his house and the fuel pump to my Powerjection III kit died again. I will not be trading it in for another. I will have to buy one of those $200 Carter Vortec style pumps. I'll be calling around and shopping for one tomorrow while I'm at work. Worst case I have to drive up to the city of Summit and pick one up. The truck has to be moved tomorrow cause It has no windows in the side and back. It is parked at the curb at my buddy's house. Wish me luck.
-
Get a Walbro pump.
That is why I always keep window kits on hand, he is selling them as they come in.
-
Well I rescued her from the ghetto today. I found a aeromotive model 11109 that was right in my PSI range and fit in the heatsink that my other pump was in. I changed it out at the curb and drove it home. Now I have a new problem.
The headlights/tailights are starting to flicker after it has been on a few minutes. Could this be a faulty switch? It is a new switch but they are cheap little stack replacement switches that cost like 12 bucks. I also think I am going to upgrade the wiring to the headlights with some relays to help reduce the draw on the switch.
-
Nice truck love the stepside. Don't know how I missed this one. Where did you get your transmission crossmember?
-
Crap. I don't remember where I got the crossmember from. Wasn't hard to find if I remember. It just bolts to the frame rails.
-

My 74 did that when I rewired it, I had gotten oil in the switch when I forgot to hook the oil gauge back up.
Start with the switch.
-
Hey ace how did u go about doing your coil over and 4 link in the rear of ur truck? I really like the way it came out and I eventually wanna do it to my truck :) Are any of those componants bought or did u make all the parts urself?
-
Do a search on the web for Fatbar four link for our year of truck. A few competitor sites carry it. It if about $1000 with the billit coil overs. Cheaper with the non billit.
-
nice work!
-
Well I got the hard part of the One Piece windows in. The inner and outer scrapper seals are on back order apparently. I'm scared to drive with them open until I get those seals put in. My flush mount back window is out for delivery so I should be able to toss that in when I get home from work today. I am hoping I can get it to the track tomorrow.

I also think I am going to upgrade the wiring to the headlights with some relays to help reduce the draw on the switch.
Are you saying you have the headlights wired through some kind of toggle switch without a relay?
-
I have them wired just like they came stock. Although I have upgraded them to the newer euro style that pull quite a bit more power. I was saying I need to put in a relay kit to accommodated my upgrade. At the moment they are wired through the harness and a stock headlight switch just like it came from the factory.

Nice! I like that color. I like those clear side markers. Where did you get them? Do you have any pictures and dimensions on your cab dolly? I need to make one of them myself. ....Joe

Wow thanks. Well I got the side markers from that place we will not mention. Not hard to find just look up euro style. I couldn't tell you the dimensions on that dolly. I threw it together in a pinch while the cab was dangling from the engine lift.
