Title: which flywheel would be best?
Post by: sphnyx991 on December 18, 2010, 06:49:01 pm
i have an 1984 chevy k20 that had a 6.2 diesel originally which i pulled out and bought a new gm zz4 350 crate motor which iam getting ready to install very soon, i am getting the last few parts together and need some advice on a flywheel. would a heavyier flywheel be better for a lifted 4x4 truck say around 30lbs compared to a 16 or 20 lb flywheel? it will mainly be street driven with some light wheeling once in awhile. i assume the heavyier one would be best for a big heavy truck

A heavier (30 lb. or so) flywheel will give you better take-off, but will take longer to build rpm's. A heavy truck with oversize tires or high gearing would benefit from the heavy one. A heavy flywheel will have more inertia for taking off, and therefore have less rpm drop between shifts. I think the one I was using was about 27 lbs., and that was stock for a 305/sm465 with 3.08 gears. It depends on so many variables which one would work the best for your application, but I would err on the heavy side given the information that you have provided.
