Title: Drag racers
Post by: acefoxx on December 22, 2010, 05:38:09 am
Does anyone else hit the strip on the weekends. I am curious as to what your running and how your running it. Before I upgraded to the solid roller cam I had the hydrolic flat EDL RPM series cam and stock suspension I was running 12.99 in the quarter mile. I have made some weight transfer adjustments and put in a 4 link. I hope to have her back racing and in the solid 12's or even 11's this spring.

Not truck related but----
Have not raced in many years.   Back in the 70s - 80s I used to race a 67 Plymouth 440 GTX.
and a 71 Dodge 340 Demon.   I still do some work for some drag racers.  in fact, Larry Morgan's
prostock trailer is in the shop right now for some repairs.

My last trip to the local dragstrip(airstrip) was a disaster.  I got my tail handed to me by a couple fast cars(347 stang on a 200+shot and a H/C/I LS1 Camaro).  I had a bunch of issues though.  My truck pretty much turned off at the light(bogged nasty) and once I hit third gear it wouldn't rev any higher.  Turns out I had a bug in the carburetor and water in the fuel cell.
You had a pretty nice 60ft there Acefoxx.  When I ran 12.8, I had a 2.1 or 2.2 60ft and 8.3 1/8mile. Are you running slicks or street tires?

Those were BFG drag radials, street legal. I will be switching to slicks this year. I found a matching set of rims that are 10". How lucky was that? $60 at a swap meet.

Dang! You got real lucky.  Your truck is running some good ET's for being such a mild combo.

thanks, I'm expecting to be in the mid to low 12's this year, maybe even the 11's. I don't really want to go much faster cause I like the streetability of it. And the faster you go the more expensive the repairs. That snd I don't want to put a cage in my cab.

Anybody else been to the track lately?  I got a buddy that put a 6.0L in his truck with a bigger cam and bigger carb than mine...I'd imagine it would be a bit faster than mine, so I'm looking forward to seeing his run the 1/4.  I'm planning to hit up our local races in March to redeem myself.

Sorry Ace, I didn't see this post before now...I was real busy with work, snow removal & other activities & wasn't on here for a bit.
The basic rundown of my engine is toward the bottom of page 1:

The wife has gone a best of 11.82 @ 112 mph with a 1.54 60'. You can check out some of my other posts for the suspension, ect. details if you would like. Lorne

1979C20, that's not bad for what it is.  I know some 1/2 ton trucks with more motor that can't run that.  What about that 2500HD you got?...I bet that thing is fast.

Lorne I wish my truck could 60ft like yours.  Lately I've been having trouble getting out of the hole.  Either the truck bogs or it just takes off slowly.  I'm hoping my last few mods will have it taken care and pay off at the dragstrip.

Team39763 I thought it was a decent time. When I had my 285s on it it was 20 seconds or so. And with the 265s it was 18. The 2500hd is my dads trucj, and its a beast. It came factory with no cat converter so he had installed a banks power turbo back 4in exhaust and it Y's at the back with 5in tips. Its throaty and its real quick. I havent put a timer on it yet, but the next time I "borrow" it ill clock it. Irish, at 45 im running about 2100rpms. And 50 is about 2200.

acefoxx it sounds like we have similar motors, what are you running for gears and tranny? I have a 700r4 and 373s. I have never drag raced before but would love to be in the 12s!

I have 373's with a TCI Streetfighter TH350. The 700r4s have a lower first gear ratio so they have a slight advantage off the line. I am hoping to get her to the track this weekend or next. Will be the first time in almost 3 years when I started the restoration.

I'm gonna be racing mine at the airstrip March 20th.  Hopefully I'll run a much better time.  I was losing 3rd gear when I ran that 11.8, now I got a completely fresh trans and a better carburetor.  I also took out about 100+ pounds from the truck.  I'm hoping to run low 11's here and if I'm lucky maybe a high 10.

No, but i test on public streets :-[  (please do not do this)

16.8 with goodwrench crate 350

17.9 with stock LG3 305

Yet gas mileage is the same with both engines.

More detail to follow....maybe.

My raceday went OK.  I'm too ashamed of the times I ran, so I won't post them or the videos.  I won 5 out of 6 races.  The 6th one could be contested though, we crossed the finishline nearly at the same time but the timeslip shows him beating me by 6 tenths(it was completely wrong).  It was a good race though...me on motor and him in a lightweight mustang, 347 stroker and 200 shot.  I kicked his tail most of the way.
What really ruined the day for me was the track/airstrip prep and the 20mph headwind.  The staff kept spraying water, atleast 100 gallons of water, all over....the burnout box, the starting line, the staging lanes, the grassy area around the burnout box.  My truck was spinning horribly and dripping with water all over.  At one point a fellow racer said I was so sideways he thought I was gonna come back to the starting line and hang out.
To finish the day off, I was gonna let my brother in law drive the truck for one run.  When he got to the staging lane I got a call from him saying my motor was spewing oil and smoke everywhere.  Turns out a trans line came loose.  All is ok and I'm planning to go to a real track soon to get a real timeslip...these slips were bogus.

Aw what the heck, I'll post the vid of me against the mustang.  Ya'll tell me was that 6 tenths between us at the first cones?  This mustang is a verified mid-high 11 second car on motor, but he was spraying a 200 shot here against me.  You can see me spinning nasty from the puddle of water they left in my lane...and I still think I ate his lunch for 99% of the race.  It's uploading now.  For some reason it looks slow as crap, I don't know if the truck is really that slow or if the video is messed up.

Well I ran my truck down the track the Friday night before I deployed in April. I shaved another 10th off my time to a 12.6. I started messing with the timing and fuel injection and messed her up. I think I fowled out a plug or two. Then as I am giving up for the night the fuel cell popped a seal. I had no way to fix it so I raced her the 22 miles home before she ran out of gas. If I ever get back from fighting this war I'll have to get back to work on her. I have some fuel cell improvements I want to do when I jerk it out of there to fix the leak.

i am a HUGE drag fan. but not in a 73-87. my 84 el camino best was 11.86 at 112. 1.60 60'. that was a fairly mild pump gas 406 and 4.11s. small (9") ET street and i would drive the car 20 miles to the track, run, then drive it back home. it just got sold recently in hopes of buying a house...i HATE growing up (at 38!). plans for the 84 i just got are hopeful 13s and a street driver.
