Title: Prices of Transmissiom and Transfer cases
Post by: snibook7537 on December 23, 2010, 07:12:26 pm
Hello, I am planing to rebuild my transmission in the spring and do not want to be without a truck so I put an ad on craigslist for a sm465 and a 205 combo.  I got three emails but one had a 208.  I also want to swap one into an auto truck so I will use it after I rebuild mine.  I got one guy who says it is out of an 82 and want's 100 for both and will deliver it to me. That one may be a 208 but for that price I can't say no. The other guy wants $250 but I know it is a 205.  I think I might buy both because the local bone yard wants $500 for a sm465 and a 208.  I am just curious what other people are getting. If and when I do swap the auto it is a TH350 with a 203 I have no clue what that is worth.  Just wondering what some people are getting for them in their area.

It all depends how bad the seller wants to sell it. I sold a perfectly good SM465/205 combo for $50. I was tired of seeing it lay around my shop floor and I figured that there wouldn't be much of a demand because they are "bulletproof" so people wouldn't need replacements.
Got a bunch of phone calls on it. I sold the next SM465/205 set up I got for $500.
That was about 4 years ago in Mass.
As a reference I just sold a Turbo 350/205 set up for $400 last week.

If this is the way you go the 208 on a 465 is 32 splines it will only mate to a 465 or th400 the 205 depends on what year 71-85 will be 10 splines no other trans will bolt to or it can be 79-85 and have 32 splines again only 465 and 400. now that’s said you can buy adapters to make them fit but then price goes up. put it this way I just bought an adapter plate to mate a 203 to a 205 now most people wanted 200 just for that plate while I lucky found one for 100. so if you do go with the 465/205 you can turn around and resell them or separate them and make some money but try to get drive shafts with the transmission if you can so that saves you some

I just gave away two 205's one stuck to a TH350 and the other to a CH465 so it all depends what it's worth to somoeone... Me I'd rather not keep a ton of crap around that I'll most likely never use so I offer my extra's up for nothing or next to it. Don't base your decisions on recyclers prices because should pay at least 50% less than what they are asking.

I see sm465's on Craigslist regularly for 50 to 100 saw one for 450 and I almost fell off the couch.

I just sold an SM465 for $100, and would ask $100 for the 208 that goes with. They were out of an 82, and that 208 is a 10 spline.
