well finally found something that i can make payments on but some of the computer talk i understand and some well i don't like
"1.8GHz AMD Phenom II triple-core mobile processor P820 with VISION technology" now is that going to be better than "VISION technology from AMD with 2.9GHz AMD Phenom II dual-core mobile processor N640" or Intel Core i3-350M processor (2.26GHz). i was thinking something from qvc since i can make payments and still have it. http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/app.nav/params.class.2120.level.3/walk.yah.0103-1084?venue=cgen also was thinking about hp heard dells are crap and Toshiba well i don't know any about name just sounds crappy lol
need some advice on what to get want a monthly payment around 200 also but at the same time i don't want to spend to much on a laptop i would be mainly uploading and downloading stuff via cell phone internet but at the same time if i set it up to dsl or what not, if i want to play a game or so i don't want to be crashing everytime you turn around

Really with technology being what it is, the processor isnt as important any more as they are all super fast. The important thing is atleast a gig of DDR and ample hard drive for what you plan on using it for.
-
If you could wait and save up for a couple months, it would probably be better. The new 2011 models come out next week. The 2010 models will be slashed drastically! I bought my wife a new HP Laptop for Christmas. she's on it right now ..LOL..The i3 and i5 Pentiums are great processors, there still Duo core and not quad core (Gaming) I would try and get 2ghz or better with 4 gigs of Ram and a 250-500 hard drive.
My wifes is 2.4Ghz 4 gig memory and 500 hard drive with the I3 Pentium and a 17.3 monitor..$499 at office depot. All the new stuff runs windows 7 and it takes about 2 gig of memory to run the program so look for big memory, as far as hard drive most people will never fill up an 80, but the bigger ones have more storage and write a little faster.
-
didnt think of that. in a way its like going car shoping
-
Or even Truck Shopping.. ;D
-
All of my computers have at least 2 gigs of memory but 4 is ideal.
-
My comp has 4 DDR Ram, a terrabyte hardrive and the quadcore processor. I do some pretty tech heavy things with my comp though. The average person would not need all this.

Dells are not crap. I swear by them. I have had compaq laptops, and they are crap. Dell desktop, I cannot testify, but the Dell notebooks are awesome. The hinges stay intact, the two Dell notebooks I have had in the past 5 years, both second hand from ebay, have been awesome. The one I type on right now i use several hours each day and have had it for about 3 yrs and bought it for about $250 then. I did install a new wireless modem when i received it. I just love XP and don't want Vista or 7. I am used to XP and when i find something i like, i don't like to change it.
Now prices are coming wayyyy down on notebooks and I will upgrade maybe next Spring. I have filled up my 80gb hard disk w/ my thosands of pics and hundreds of mp3 albums, but, i have two external 100gb hard drives that I put most of my mp3's and pics on now.
I love Dells, the keypad and monitor hinges hold up extremely well.
-
I've had dell and HP laptops. They're both real good as far as I can tell. I also have a little gateway netbook and haven't had problem one in a year or so. I haven't had any other brands so I can't comment on them.
I like the HP's a little more though because they have available that nifty dock that let's you plug in everything from a monitor, to usb stuff to the power cord and LAN and speakers so when I hook my laptop upto my desk stuff its one connector and everything I have is hooked up. And the dock still works with each new HP laptop i get. I've got a 17" HP DV9715nr right now, but it's about time to upgrade again and give this one to the kids.
What exactly do you want to do with it, what size screen do you want, and will you use it mostly plugged into AC power or on betteries?
What are your computer specs right now? is it fast enough?
Here's just a guess, It would be faster than my laptop, and mine isn't bad even after 3 years for a laptop. I can actually play some video games on mine.
15" screen 320GB hd

about the battery well i dont depend on them much i dont think they last long anyway. i dont have a computer to now just the droid my moms computer is almost 10 years only if not that it still has windows ME lol. the screen i would want 15 or bigger but not sure how much bigger the 17 would feel so i think ill be happy with 15

We just got our daughter a Toshiba from their site for Christmas. It is brand new so I don't know how it will hold up but it seems great so far. I gave it to our computer guru who cleaned out the bloatware that it had on it and he also installed some software for us. He said it was a decent computer for what we paid ($649).
-
Like "SgtDel" Pointed out, the Dells are not crap. Everything goes in phases..First it was Gateway, and the Sony, and Toshiba, and Dell. Now HP is pretty popular.
Don't overlook brands you haven't seen before, Like MSI. MSI builds just about all the pieces that the Laptops listed above have in them, Now so they decided to go ahead and build their own. There tough as nails and run Good. Lenovo, is another one most people haven't heard of (Lenovo = IBM) some claim they are the NP205 of Laptops, Army Grade.
One other thing to keep in mind, No matter how Big or Bad your computer is, it will only be as fast as your ISP will allow. So try to invest in a High Speed connection. I like my Roadrunner, from my cable provider.
-
I have a lot of Dell computers and they're all pretty good but latest laptop is an HP and it's awesome.
-
I am on my second Dell right now and both have been good. They both made a lot of miles flying in baggage comparts of choppers offshore and have held up well. The 1st one got a virus and the hard drive fried. Before that I had a compaq presario and it was junk. I'd get another Dell if I had too.
-
I just bought a HP dv7-4170us laptop. I do alot of photo/video editing. I think I paid like 700 form HP. It has been the best computer I,ve owned. I've been pretty much all HP for my computers
-
ok i know this is an old topic but shopping for a new laptop. the hp that i got after this original post think i paid $700 had started acting up think it was a virus then i cracked the screen, tried to replace that but my caveman style of working on thing kind of broke the motherboard. got a new motherboard but its old and havnt put it back together yet, but when i do i think ill just let the little ones play with it. so with the new technology thats came out and maybe new members that have opinions on what to get. price range is 700 or below atleast thats what i think is reasonable.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02674540&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en
i use photoshop and surf online, dont really play games on them so it doesnt need to be a gaming laptop. dont need touchscreen (would be a waist)
-
Why not clean up your existing laptop and get an iPad or a tablet?
-
Want the kid to be able to play learning games online like ABC mouse.for some reason I really hate anything apple makes. Could keep the laptop for myself but its over 3 years and its outdated. If I can get her running good again I might keep her just so I won't be waisting money.

I have a Acer laptop (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/acer-aspire-17-3-laptop-intel-core-i3-6gb-memory-500gb-hard-drive-steel-gray/5009277.p?id=1219106277450&skuId=5009277&ref=06&loc=01&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=5009277&extensionType=pla:g&s_kwcid=PTC!pla!!!66713926186!g!!52698021559&kpid=5009277&k_clickid=4a514998-5d45-4d62-8f09-2c70103d54a0&kpid=5009277) like the one in the link.
I use it for my forums, searching the internet, and my small business I have on the side. It works great for me and never has given me problems.
-
I also hate windows 8 lol. Maybe cause I'm not used to it but love regular windows. That Acer is probably a little better than the HP and cheaper
-
I believe you can still request windows 7 on it. But any new laptop is going to come with windows 8.
-
We got a couple dells from new egg
One new and one used refurbished
There is also one other site that sells used refirbs
Can't remember the name though
-
My daughter just turned 1 and has an iPhone (in airplane mode) and an iPad. She started playing with them when she was 5 months old. By 8 months she could hold and tap now she handles them like a pro. My woman's grandmother is 86 and uses iPad as well. No one can convince me that they aren't user friendly. All of our teachers use iPads and all of our students get iPads. My laptop rarely gets used anymore.
Do you have a scan tool? Use your iPad as an OBDII scan tool. I use it in the garage, for work, for school, for tunes, surfing the web and a plethora of great apps. Kids love them too. My laptop sits mostly in my briefcase unless I'm working with excel on the go. I'm not saying it's right for you but if you already have a laptop that does what a laptop does why get another when you have other perhaps better options?
-
I use my laptop for my day job and a whole lot of other stuff, I personally prefer to surf the web and be on the forums on my laptop though.
-
You tried an iPad ?
The other place we get used stuff from is tigerdirect.com

With Windows 8 (because I believe stop selling Windows 7 so do not think you can get it anymore), most people can not get use to the "modern screen" (titled screen that pops up when you boot). You can install a program called classic shell (free) or Start8 (better, $5) and you get your standard Windows 7 start menu back and can disable the modern screen from being first thing you see. The modern screen is still accessible if you want it, you just do not have to use it.
As far as brands, they really like cars some brand new ones can be lemons and other will last a life time and they could be same brand. I use the saying "you get what you pay for" more. Hp are good, but got a bad rap because of a bunch of motherboard recalls they had to do few years back (like Toyota and the gas pedal). Right now I think who has the best bang for buck is ASUS, but again that is my opinion. After that it is your preference....ultrabooks are light but cost more and standard laptop you will get more for less money, etc.
I have been a computer tech over 10 years (between fixing, selling, graphic/web design) and I have own ASUS, HPs, Alienware, MacBook Pro (own a 7 year old one right now and she is still running the newest software), Dell (own XPS 12 convertible right now) and I do not have a preference in brand.
If you want it to last (specs wise), I would get a Quad core at least (AMD quad, i5 or i7), get at least 4gb RAM, and if you got the money I would get a 256gb (or bigger) SSD (solid state drive). My windows 8 machine (i7, 8gb ram, and 256gb ssd) boots from dead cold off to log in screen in 3 seconds. I do a lot of photoshop and stuff also, I just use an external/networked hard drive for my project so they do not fill my laptop drive up (because of smaller size). But depends on how much work you do.
I know it was long, but hope it helps

OK blazing. Got a question for you put my HP back together after replacing screen and motherboard. Fist time really messing with the insides of a computer (second if you count the first attempt where I broke the motherboard ) but anyway its a HP pavilion dv7-4276nr. Well now when you press the power all that happens is the power and WiFi led will flash and keep on flashing 6+ times. The fan doesn't come on, the caps or number lock doesn't come on. I get nothing any suggestions?
-
The two LEDs on the side also flash (power and cdplayer?)
-
Did you plug the ribbon cable back in all the way?
-
think so. when i switch mother boards i had to switch the cpu, memory and wireless adapters along with the fan and heat sink. took it back apart this morning and saw i didnt plug the fan back in, figured a safety prevented it from starting due to an in-op fan or at least i hoped. well thats not the problem took it apart again removed the memory, cpu and everything i could thinking a bad connection. but it all seamed good and put it all back together still no start. did this a couple more times before i went to bed. tomorrow ill switch motherboards with the old one and see if it starts back up. the old motherboard would work just the keyboard wouldn't

Sorry been sick and trying to get a baby room done as me and my wife are expecting (so been a little digitally MIA). Anyways.....if the keyboard just didn't work, 95% that is just the keyboard and it has its own circuit board. But it will sounds like the cpu was not seated properly, or it is not the correct motherboard for the laptop. They also have different version of same motherboard and you have to be careful that you do not have a older one that does not support your processor (really rare but can happen). But you really need to make sure the CPU is in all the way without damaging contacts and make sure that it is in the correct way. Or the motherboard is DOA, because if it is not making it to BIOS, it is either CPU or Motherboard.
With all that you have to keep in mind that yours was a pretty high end one when you purchased it...and HP makes "special" computers just for Walmart, Best Buy and that is what the two last letters are for. This can cause some to have different specs and oyu have to make sure you are replace with correct motherboard. There were a lot of DV7-4*** series that were AMD processors and yours should have an i5 in it. So if your motherboard is for the AMD chips, it will not work.
I do not know what part number or where you got motherboard from, just trying to spit out all ideas. But I would check OEM board for sticker that says what to replace it with and make sure they match.
-
i emailed the company they said to unplug the ribbon and plug it back in lol. i haven't got around to trying the old mother board again maybe ill try that later tonight once the little one gets to sleep

Forgive me for entering the fray but perhaps it will save someone from the debauchery. Steer clear of Toshiba. Absolute piss poor customer service. Had to send in my laptop and was charged $25 even after purchasing an ESP with Brandsmart. Had an issue less than a year in, BM wouldnt touch it til the manuf. warranty ran out which left me at a rock and a hard place. Sent specific instructions per their option, and they disregarded them and wiped my computer completely without backup up anything. They gave the option which i of course opted for, but was not followed.
Never again Toshiba, never again.

ok so i still havnt got a new laptop yet. but with cyber monday coming up, i might be doing my buying then. but while im searching i didnt know if anyone knows of a good deal with a laptop still looking for a $6-700 but if someone sees a good deal for something like $1k thats marked in my price range i good for that. so if you could help out and keep your eyes open for me, thanks

I bought my Samsung a year or so ago from Best Buy for around $600. I paid retail, no discounts or anything. I returned an HP just before that. The HP monitor gave a purple tinge to everything. Nothing wrong with it technically. It just liked purple.
I think your best value is in the midrange models, midway between the most expensive and cheapest. The speed is good and the cost is about half of the top-flights. Unless you're a hardcore gamer, you don't need the latest and greatest.
Processor speed is largely irrelevant unless you're a gamer or a 3-D architect. The biggest speed increases now come from RAM (get as much as you can) and hard drive. Look for an SSD (solid state drive) hard drive. That will give you the most noticeable increase in speed. I don't have an SSD (too expensive and small when I was looking) and, honestly, the slowest part of my computer is the network.
If you have lots of photos, videos, music files and such, get as big a hard drive as you can. One TB is good.
Samsung is a good brand, but frankly, every computer annoys me now. This one has a very "helpful" track pad. It randomly places the cursor in various different spots as I type (no, I'm not palm typing). Windows and Mac are unbearable. I use Ubuntu Linux now and am very, very happy with it. It's a nightmare to set up. The learning curve is very steep, but once done, it just works. No drama, no viruses, no software installing itself and menu bars rearranging themselves. No Flash modules or pop-ups. It's how you expect a computer to work.

found three hp "saving" $200

a little overkill but it should keep my happy and play anything i want
Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 12GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive
but the part im not happy with is the "cyber monday" price $100. i bought it online and went to the store to pick up. got there and went to the pc section. found my pc but the store price was $899 with no indication of a sale price just that it was the regular price

Did very well. Have heard good stuff about the Envy, but I havent had an HP product since the Pavilions. Had that for several years and served me well.
With 12gb of ram, a 1TB HD and that i7, you should be in the game for nearly anything outside of hardcore gaming. But even then, it should probably handle that too. Specs def look like more than enough imo, say for my needs(audio recording, which is a processor/ram beast). And I have an i3 2.8ghz with ddr3 maxed out @ 8GB and it more than handles audio recording, so you should def be pleased with the performance.
