Title: 1986 700r4 problems
Post by: Justintime on December 26, 2010, 10:02:24 am
Maybe you could point me in the right direction, I have a 1986 chevy 1500 2 wheel drive, 305 motor and am putting a 350 with a non computer controlled carb on. No brackets are being changed on the carb, after taking the wires off the carb and replacing it with a 1974 qjet the trans shifts really early and is acting weird. Any help would be great. Can I bypass the ECM and trans wires??  The only wires I touched are on the carb. Never touched the trans yet. Thank you

I don't know about the ECM and wire part but it is my experience that if you are putting a Qjet on there that was not originally paired with a 700r4 then you need to change the linkages on the carb. The geometry of the kickdown cable is different from a th350/400 to a 700r4. I had to buy the conversion brackets for my linkage on my Edelbrock when I had it on my 84 with a 700r4. The valve in the 700r4 that the kickdown cable connects to is very touchy. Correct me if I am wrong but an incorrectly adjusted cable can burn up a 700r4 real quick. I finally gave up on mine and got a TCI street fighter th350.

Adjust the tv cable. I've smoked a fresh 700 with a bad tv cable
