Title: Suburban Dash Bezel in 84 Truck
Post by: Yamaha74 on December 27, 2010, 01:45:47 pm
I purchased a suburban dash bezel that was in good shape to put in my 84 truck.  The only difference I see is the hole for the radio.  It is one large retangle hole versus the small retangle hole with the two small round holes on each side of it.  I think it is for the factory radios that come in most GM cars even still today.  The other difference is the two bottom right screw holes holes that mount the bezel to the dash are in a different location.

Can anybody give me some options or thoughts on this?  I don't want to start cutting up and modifying my dash if this isn't a good option.  Any pictures of this conversion would be great.  Originally I thought I wanted to use the factory radio with the two knobs but I now think I am just going to go with an aftermarket radio or would be fine with a factory newer style GM radio.

Sounds like your replacement bezel is out of an 88-91...
They had a larger hole for the radio due to the fact it was a double DIN and not a single DIN like earlier trucks....

I am going that route as well.  I am going to cut out the radio steel dash off a 1991 Suburban and piece it in my 85.  I have manual door panels and the wood grain dash insert that are in perfect condition.  I am going to seam it under the dash pad where is isn't seen, just going to have to measure twice, OK maybe a dozen time and cut once.  While it is out I am going to fill all the unwanted holes that the previous owner put in it for the CB mount, mic and brake controller while it is out of the truck and also put the dual tank switch in the right spot.

Yeah it is from a 88-91.  What do you mean by DIN?

zieg85, is there another option besides cutting out the radio steel dash from a suburban and piecing it in?

"Head units generally come in either single DIN (180 x 50 mm panel) or double DIN (180 x 100 mm panel) size. The depth is not standardized. The US standard for a DIN radio is 2" x 7" and the Double DIN sized radio is a 4" x 7". "

You can just make the hole in the dash larger with a dremel/Jigsaw/Sawzall and install a double DIN radio.

unfortunately no, the dash is slightly different so the newer dash bezel fits it right.

Just put the single din cover on it.

the 89-91's were DIN and a halfs.

Pic 1 is of the 84-88 dash bezel (no wiper switch hole for the 81-83's) All the 88's I've run across so far have had this set up.
Pic 2 is of the 89-91 Blazer/Suburban dash bezel.

I ended up finding a good truck bezel so I eill be using it instead of the suburban one now.  Thanks for all the info.  Now I have to decide whether I want to go with a factory radio or cut the bezel and go with a aftermarket single DIN unit.
