i have a stock 305 v8 in my 83 gmc is there any relatively cheap ways to add a little horsepower?

A good tune up, proper timing, proper carb adjustment, check all vacuum lines, all these little things add up quite a bit.
If you have a 2bbl carb it could be swapped for a 4bbl.
other than that headers and a free flowing exhaust usually help a lot.
an upgraded cam could help too if you want to get that involved.

a properly tuned stock 305 with a 4 bbl carb and headers can be a respectable street vehicle. I ran one in mine for 3 years while I built my 406.

Headers, free flowing exhaust, intake manifold with a 4-barrel, or best yet a 350 sbc off craiglist's. I find them cheap this time of year.

i even put sr torque 305 heads from world product on a 305 i have.. 250-300 hp is not hard to get with a 305 and majorioty of the stuff will swap to a 350/400 sbc
