ok so i have a 79 chevy c10 and it has a strait 6 in it the vin on the cab says its a 250 but i dont know if its ever been changed, i had a guy telling me it was a 292 because the valve coves had the dip in them. where on the engine is the vin# and is there any good sites for decoding? thanks -kyle

Looks like a 250 to me. The 292 side covers are taller.

Definitely a 250 cause of the short lifter covers and cause the 292 has the passenger side motor mount and fuel pump reversed!

If it is supposed to be original, it would be a 250, a 292 wasn't offered in half ton.

Also looks like the 250 in my '80.

can you comment on this? Is this for later years? My '68 C10 originally came with a 292!
Now it has a really expensive 292 with all of the expensive Clifford goodies!!!

Yes, in 1979 292 engines were not offered in C-10's only the heavier light duty trucks had them.

Definitely a 250. The 292's didn't have the emmisions (humps on the heads)
