Post by: okiewelder1973 on January 13, 2011, 09:13:27 pm
Does $150 sound kinda steep for a quadrajet?

What do you get for 150? A used carb or one that has been cleaned up and rebuilt?

for that price it better include having the throttle shaft bushings installed.

On getting one rebuilt, if you look at the price of the rebuild kit, about $44.oo.  So that leaves about $106.00 for labor, shipping for the shop to get the rebuild kit, and taxes.  I don't know what the going rate per hour for the area you are in. If you ever rebuilt a carb., you know it takes at least 2 hours (to clean it right ), so doing the math that is less than $50.00 an hour for someones labor rate.  I would say that is a good deal.  If you think it is too steep, you can always use your God given right and do it your self.  That is why this country is great.

Absolutely. I paid for a rebuild on a q-jet and it came back sucking air like crazy. I bought the bushing kit and did it myself, and got my money back. It's easy to do yourself if you decide to go that route. If you pay someone else to build it, demand new ones. If they don't know what you are talking about find someone else to do the work. Also, for reference, a new stage 2 q-jet from SMI is about $360, and it's set up for your motor.

Yep ,I can guarantee any qjet that needs a rebuild WILL need throttle shaft bushings. they are a source of major vac leaks .

thanks for the input. i never messed with a qjet..always holley. the guy i bought the truck from said that he had both tanks dropped and cleaned out...either he's full of crap or whoever did it forgot the pass tank. i switched over to the pass side and got all kinds of crap.
