Title: Got my trans!
Post by: xCaliC10x on January 24, 2011, 08:16:33 pm
Well, after much debating, I finally got a trans. I wanted a TH400 to deal with the power I was going to be making when I got my 388 done. However I still love a manual box, the T56 was too expensive to do, The M22 was expensive and hard to find, didn't really want to do an M21 or M20 and have to step up in a year or so. I decided on the Saginaw. I got mixed reviews online, and from friends, but with my motor in its current form (not exactly earth shattering), and the fact that I don't beat the heck out of my cars anymore, I figure this is a good step. I got it off Craigslist for $400 with an actual Hurst shifter and linkage for a 1st gen camaro, which will work with a Muncie, so I will sell it and make some money back (only reason I paid that much) guy who had it in his camaro, had it rebuilt, drove it, built a motor and put a TH400 behind it. Its clean and tight. I hope to get the swap going soon. I will sell my SM465 to the 4X4 crowd so this may be a cheap swap!

I hope it holds up for you.  I have not had any luck with Saginaw's even with stock V-8's.  I had a M20 that held up great.

Borg Warner T10 would have been a better choice.  Saginaws don't handle abuse or alot of power for a long time.

Surprisingly the Muncie 3 speed takes a lot of abuse.  I used one for my circle track car for 3 years without any problems.  Not serious hp, maybe 400, but constant full throttle to slam on the brakes in the corners on the asphalt short track between 1st and 2nd.  Pulled it out of a 77 C10 with over 100K miles.

Thanks guys. This is a temp solution for me. I will upgrade to a bigger box when I make some more power. But all in all, with what I got it for, plan on selling the Hurst shifter set up, and then selling my SM465 for, it should be a wash. I hope it holds up, but as I said earlier, I'm not as hard on my cars anymore. No drag launches, at least on this motor/trans combo yet!
