Title: Lowering a Blazer
Post by: slammed79 on January 29, 2011, 12:59:07 pm
I've lowered more a pretty fair amount of our trucks in the past, and I've got a good cache of parts for introducing them to mother earth, but I've never done a blazer or a suburban.

As it stands I'm looking at a 79 2wd Blazer and a 73 Suburban, one of the two is gonna be my next squarebody and daily driver.

My question is this: If I put the flip kit I have on either of these, will I need to cut the floor to clearance the 12 bolt?

want have to cut the floor, but you will HAVE to run a C-notch.

One thing you should be awarpe of is the gas filler hose on the Blazer. If you use a lowering shackle it will need to be modified. The longer shackle will not clear.

sorry to hijack and drag out an old post but I have a burb and am wanting to do a flip on so I could use some help. How small of a c-notch would you use or can you give me some ideas on how to do it so it fits under the floor.  I have heard of people getting a thick 5-6 inch pipe cutting it in half and welding it for a notch but I have also heard of alot of people frowning on doing this.
Thanks

If you can weld, the pipe is fine. Depending on the condition of the springs and the travel you may not even need to notch it. Mock it up and check. I've flipped the axle and used smaller bump stops without a problem.

I have been dropping these for about 25 years.  Up until now I have yet to buy an aftermarket C-notch.  A good welder can put it in fine.  I still have a truck I dropped back in 1989 and it is perfectly fine.

It is in the 73-87chevytrucks.com thread stickied in the Ride section: (infact on the first page, both of those have a fabbed notch.)

Can this be done without removing the cab?  I'm pretty sure my cab and bed are one piece.

putting in a notch?  Who's is it?  bolt-in?

It's mine.  I'm talking about the typical kits that come with the notch hardware that bolts in.  It does'nt look like you could slide the brace in over the frame without taking off the cab.  Truck beds are easy to remove, but a Blazer cab and rear area are all one piece.

As in who's kit, not who's Blazer...
If it requires through bolting you can losen one side of the body bushings and jack the body up install one side and then do the opposite on the other side.

I figure I'll use Belltec's lowering kit.  Does anybody know if McGaughy's kit is better?

I like McGaughy's for the made in the USA factor and I believe that you can get them from Capt's store.

No McGaughy's for me right now.  My supplier was spotty at best so I dropped them.

slammed79,

How did you reroute the gas fill hose?  I'm lowering with shackles and will have to do this.  I was just thinking I would make a few trips to the auto Parts store and find a curvy radiator hose and cut to fit.

Radiator hose will not hold up long for gas. I'd get some bulk filler hose from napa and do your best. I haven't gotten to drop a blazer yet, as I haven't found one I liked or could afford yet. I'm still looking for a cheap builder, but its been time consuming to say the least.
