I have a chance to fix up my 20x40 shop a bit. Besides a fridge w icemaker what do i need? I would like to put some cabinets in it..... are there any recommendations that dont break the bank?
I already have welders, roll abouts, benders, vise, vice, drill press, hyd press (20 ton) blast cabinet, and an upright compressor. Is an inside lift out of the question? got 16 ft ceilings.
s
Thanks

16ft ceilings will accommodate a lift just fine, a paint Booth would be handy too, maybe not a full size, but a good sized room to do parts in.
Just my two cents

how about some tunes, heat, parts washer. as far as cabinets go how about making some, pretty easy to do if they are for a shop.

High speed internet.

The first thing I would do is coat the floor, then add a shower. ( my wife hates me coming the house all dirty and greasy :P )

Everything listed above plus a toilet, pallet racking for tall storage, good ventilation with a window unit AC, insulation if you don't have it, additional lighting and outlets, shop air drops, hose reels, a fire extinguisher, and a cabinet for your paints & oils, etc. Check your area for surplus sales and auctions. Sometimes schools will sell off old lockers and metal storage cabinets that you can get cheap and work great for misc. storage. A comprehensive selection of hardware on hand in some kind of storage unit or bins can save a lot of headache too. Adding another 20' with another overhead door would be cool.
You could put in a lift, but make sure your floor slab is up to the task. It's not the compressive strength you need to worry about, it's the uplift on the bolts if you put an unbalanced load on a 2-point lift. You may need to rip up a couple squares and pour pad footings with rebar under the post locations, which isn't a big deal.

I would suggest not to put too many things in there without drawing up a plan on how you want to use the shop.
Draw it out on graph paper. Cut out some little pictures of equipment you will need and lay em on your plan. Move things around til it fits your idea of what the shop should look like. ie- don't put your tools on the opposite end from your work.
Ditto on the cabinets that were mentioned. Lots of cabinets.
Put elect. outlets and air drops near the work bench and work area..
Have fun. (It'll make your wife mad)... ha!

I think they recommend a foot of cement for a hoist. 16 ft ceilings is more than enough.

swimsuit posters...

Posters are nice, but how about the models themselves? Did I mention a couch? and an attorney?

gotta have a tire machine...

With a 16' ceiling, I would have a Gorbel bridge crane.
