I'm new to the site and just had a few questions. I've got a 87' Silverado short bed 4x4 and have a set of 14" wide Micky Thompson rims that were givin to me in trade. They were take off another Chevy truck years ago. What will need to be done for me to run such a wide rim or if this is even adviseable!! I've had this truck for over 20 years and have been wanting to bring it back to life and I do like a WIDE tire! Altho I already have these rims, It won't hurt my feelings at all if some of you just laugh at me for attemting such a thing! I had to trade due to the guy that had them would have never gave me the money he owed me anyway! SO!, Any advise would be Greatly appreciated!!
Thanks!!

What size tire would you be running? and what's the backspacing on those rims? Any lift?
-
I believe it is 3-5/8" . I haven't gotten the tires yet. Any suggestions would be greatful tho! As far as the truck itself, everything is still stock with the exception of the motor. I just had it completely rebuilt. The body shop is next then up it goes. I was wondering just how much of a lift will I need to get these to work as well. Thanks!

Need to pick a tire size then we can decide how much lift is necessary, the tire are the only thing that might rub, unless your using 15" wheels on an 8 lug, then another set of problem arise.
-
The only other issue I see is how far they stick out if that backspacing is all you have, I know in my state tires can not stick out more than 2" outside the wheel well.
-
That can be solved with fender flares.
If it were me I'd lift it (if not already done) to clear 37's and toss those wheels and the 37's on with some flares to keep it legit.

So far all I have done is just work on the motor and it will be in the body shop for paint hopefully next week! Everything is stock down to the original wheels! I was just wanting some advise on how wide of a tire I can put on without having trouble down the road! Also, I was wanting a good riding tire as well, Not so aggressive for off road use!
Thanks!

Your leaving to many variables, we need concrete numbers on tire size, and lift height in order to say yes or no. The rims will mount up fine, the tires are what will rub. For a street queen, I would recomend the Super Swamper sts they come in big balloony sizes and ride quiet, just don't hit the local mud hole without a friend.

I will give you my opinion on tires and wheels that wide from my experience. I had 39.5x18x15 on 15x10 on my blazer and you just about had to drive with both hands on the steering wheel at all times. if theres a dip in the road on one side of the lane my blazer would change lanes if i wasnt paying attention. if the lane has a ridge in it the tires wanted to be on one side or the other so i had to fight it. it got very aggravating in heavy traffic. i under stand you may not go to as tall of a tire as 39.5 but i now have 41x14.50x20 and no lane changing it drives as good as my fathers stock 97 z71. again thats my experience.

dcayers has a very good point, on the back I do not see a problem, but on the front that truck is going to want to follow any dip, or groove in the pavement, you probably won't like those wide tires up front.

I just purchased the same wheels for my truck with 35/17.50/15 Mckey Thompson tires.I was runnin a 4"susp and 2"body.They cleared fine but when you cramp the wheels side to side the outter lug of the tire will hit the wheelwell molding. So I just installed a 6"suspension lift.Clearance will no longer be an issue.Oh and the truck drives a good as it did with the 35/12.50/15 BFG All Terrains that were on it.Tires have a hum to them though. They are balanced.
