Title: 1980 Chevy Silverado Limited Edition
Post by: 87454westernhauler on February 04, 2011, 09:53:05 am
just bought a 1980 chevy 1/2 ton silverado Limited Edition 350 sbc4b with 350 trans on tuesday for $600. Drove it 40 miles home in a 50 mph cross wind in a blizzard with no problems except the heater core blowing out in it when i got stuck in my yard. Has only 112k on it and very little rust for an iowa truck. steering and suspension on it are like new and it has all the bells and wistles on it. have you guys ever heard of limited edition silverados before? has the crome tube grill and custom bench seat in it, so i don't know if that was an option with the limited edition or not or if someone just stuck it on it. this truck is a riley sweet and in very good shape for the price.

No such thing as a "Limited Edition" in 1973-1987.

i was working on trying to get the drivers side window and locks to work and found out that all of the wires for it are busted off in between the door and cab. is there a no wire set up so that the wires don't have to be ran in between the door and cab? Spent all of sunday afternoon removing all of the old window tint and cleaning the glass and doors up and waxed the white roof.

I think autoloc.com makes a contact plate kit that'll sever the connection when the door is open. Its done with contact plates that mount to your door and cowl. Pretty cool stuff but I like having my doors open and speakers blaring

The Limited Edition was probably something that either the dealer did as a dress-up job or perhaps in your region of the state. I see stuff like that around here all the time, especially when I lived on the prairies. They were always making "Special Editions" out of something. Sounds like a nice truck though.

I finnaly figured out what was wrong with the passanger window. the channel that bolts to the glass and that the rollers for the regulator run through is missing >:(. would one off of a manuel crank regulator work or is the power window one different, and how would you guys recomend trying to put it in?? ::)

The channel at the bottom of the glass?  I think its glued on.  If that's what you're talking about get another window glass.

have a big question ??? and posibly an issue with it.  :-X Since i bought it the oil pressure gage only reads if i revit up, I thought it was just the dash gage, so I replaced the dash gage with one I know works and still doing the same thing. I just replaced the motor oil and filter with 10w30 and no change. I am wondering if the sensor by the distributor is bad or maybe something bigger????
Another thing is that I started degreesing the motor and cleening the carb and pulled the vacumn advance out and the PCV valve to klean it and relized that it was full of white sludgy type stuff! I did pull all of the plugs on the passanger side and replaced them and they had like no oil on them, just carbon build up. I asked my dad about it and he thinks that it is antifreeze????????? I am wondering if it is sludge in the oil as i didn't see and antifreeze in the old oil. could the sludge if that is what it is be blocking the oil pressure sensor or what are your guyes thought on it, cause my dad is wanting me to sell it and I would not rilly want to do that with it!!!! help and thanks

There was a recent post about a similar oil pressure problem.  Basically there's a strong chance that your motor is gone.  It could be the oil pump but that's not usually the case.  Vile's suggestion on that post was to remove the oil pan and use plastigage to see if the clearance from main bearings to crank journals is gone.  I don't have tons of experience with this, but have known a few people with the same problem.  In every case it was the clearances on the mains.  A 454 will drop in, but you'll need all of the accessory brackets.  That's another topic I can't personally speak of, but there's a number of posts on here for that swap if you want to search.

Is that French for suspension? Spell check button is very close to the post button.

If you're putting in a big block just use big block springs.

I am a little annoyed right now, a guy down the road has this 81 silverado 1/2 ton with a fairly descent body on it and it has a big bored out 454 that runs and drives for only 600. wish I could afford to buy that!!!

454 will go where the 350 is.  The truck will sit a little lower.

my dad was trying to tell me that the motor would be to heavy for the suspension.  ??? thinking that if i could get it to run beter, I will just drive it this summer for work, just 10 miles round trip to where i am working thuis summer and find a cheaper car to drive when i go to school this fall and maybe pull the 350 and rebuild it or put the 454 in it. still debating. How do capt and vill pay for it all? ;D

this think is a MUD DIGGER! ;D the frost went out westerday and my dad got the 87 r30 454 dually western hauler baried up to the running bords in our yard with a flat bed on it. the idiot thought that he could drive it through an area in our yard that has never had grave befor and went straite down! >:( so I threw a chain on it with the 80 siverado 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive and pulled it staite out with no issues on the first try!! ;D covered the hauler with mud ;D I was suprised it did what it did!

So I looked at the carb last night, is there suposed to be a mixture screw in the front middle of the quadrajet carb? I have bean degreasing the motorand it looks like there is a spot where a gas/air mixture screw is suposed to go, but is missing. Not shure where the ajuster screws are located at.

There's two and sometimes they are under factory installed plugs if no one has removed them.  They are idle mixture only (not the entire range).

where abouts should they be located at. would a quadrajet off of a 454 work on a 350 Sb?

The plugs usually blend in and are hard to see.  They are at the front bottom of the carb., basically against the gasket.  One on the left, one on the right, something like 3" or 4" apart.  I have never had to pull the plugs out of one, but I think you use a self tapping screw and pull them out with channel locks or something similar by pulling on the screw.  A slide hammer would be ideal.  A 454 quadrajet could work, but it will need a lot of tuning.  I suspect you would have to change the jets and metering rods in addition to normal adjustments.

Finally attempted painting my door panels a couple of weeks ago and look nice. wound up sanding them down, priming them 2 or 3 time and them painting them black, I may try to paint them red again but for now black looks way better than faded out dry rot. Here is a link to a picture of them back on the truck.
