My sister in law and I don't really get along, I'll just throw that out there, but right now I love the woman. She made my brother sell me back the 74!
I picked up the truck in October of 2009 for $800. The kid I got it from had the bed filled with trash, front to back, 3/4" from the top of the bed rail. I spent two hours at the circle k in Globe, Az cleaning out the bed so I could drive it home. From there, I ran two gallons of simple green through my buddies pressure washer trying to get the oil out of the bed. We followed that up with gutting the interior to clean it out. I came up on 50 bucks in change under the seat, as well as a few snap-on wrenches and sockets. We spent 6 hours that night cleaning it out and making it habitable, I threw away the old seat when I got home the next day and put in the one from my nephews abandoned 77 project. Next was to junk the white steelies and shot tires for something that looked a bit better. I then re-wired the truck nose to tail, there were splices and shorts that I couldn't figure out what they went to, so I found a cherry harness in the junkyard for 35 bucks, and spend the weekend installing that.
After a week or two of driving the truck I was trying to figure out why the titanic had better turning radius than the truck, and I found the frame was cracked and the rivits holding the front most crossmember had worked loose. That crossmember isn't goin anywhere anytime soon, it got welded back into place and the cracks in the frame were welded up. I put a stereo and a windshield in it in November 2009, and then changed the rearend for a 3.73 from a 4.10.
The 3 finger pressure plate went out in Feburary of last year, that was replaced with a updated unit and I've had almost zero issues with it since then, at least nothin that took any longer than 5 min to fix.
So, now I got mah baby back, and all those things I wanted to do before are now back on the table. First thing is going to be fix the steering box, which just needs an input shaft seal. Does anyone know the partnumber? (I thought I read it on here a while back but can find it.) Next will be tires and exhaust.
I wanna swap in a 5 speed, and thats gonna get done before I lower it. I still have a door that I need to bodywork and prime to throw on it. Also the bed is pretty hammered, so I'm lookin for one of those too, but I do have a shortbed in storage, anybody local wanna help me shorten this beast? ;D
Ideas abound... Here's some Pics:

Nice, but why did your brother end up with it in the first place???
-
I wasn't driving it very much, since I had my 96 Yukon, and my brother needed some wheels since his motorcyle was in the shop. Since I was and am still unemployed I needed the cash I sold it to him.
Well, I got my tax return and still have the check from totaling the Yukon over thanksgiving weekend, so I was able to buy it back.
-
Sounds like a happy ending to me. I'd throw a highway gear under it if it were me. Great looking 74
-
Nice thing your sister-in-law didn't like the truck so you could buy it back. Good luck on your list of projects.
-
Well I'm lookin on Craigslist for 5 speeds, it may happen sooner than later. I'm ordering my new bfg's tomorrow after I go to the bank. 255/70/15s for the rear and 245/60/15's for the back.
I'm excited to get goin on this again, plus I've got wheels again.

Did you mean the 255/70/15s for the front ?
-
Sorry... the 255/70's are goin out back, the 245/60's are for the front. I've got 255/60's on the back right now and want something a touch taller.

nice truck

Well I haven't updated anything on the truck in a long while, and its long over due. A month and some change ago I got a swb frame for it as well as bushings, ball joints and some Eastwood chassis paint. I was going to have the frame sand blasted but work ground to a halt and money is just not there. So the new frame was power washed and shoved into storage. I'm looking for a new job, which always sucks but the foreclosure business is in the gutter and I hate being broke. I'm currently trying to get a blazer tank off a buddy of mine so I can go back to work on the truck, I'll post pics when my internet is working, I don't have any on my phone.
-
It seems that I get about one thing done a year. I picked up a set of Dodge 20" steelies tonight and mounted them up.
$425 for all 4 wheels, tires and adaptors. I'm very happy with how they look, but the 35 series rubber needs to get swapped or for some 45 series or better.
Better pics coming tomorrow.

How is it not having carpet on your floor? Is it really loud or anything? My carpet is all torn up with insulation coming out and I was thinking of ripping it all out and just have nice clean paint underneath :)
-
ive been driving my 78 k10 for the last month with bare floor and it is louder but not unbearable.
-
It's pretty loud on the freeway and when I take off from a stoplight. I'm now looking for a 5 speed, then I'll get carpet back in it.
-
My 83 has never had carpet, a couple of 6"x9"s and a 8" sub and you don't hear the road noise haha. One thing I have been considering is something call Lizard Skin I think, it's a spray on sound deadner, looks a little thinner than dyna-mat I think.
-
Ok cool, maybe ill just take it out, but then I gotta get a system so drown out the noise haha. I saw a thread on here where someone carpeted their truck with the $8 walmart auto carpet and it looked good too, so I'm torn on what to do....
-
The last few months have been exciting, but most of it pales to finally getting my truck lowered this last weekend. Still needs some work, but it is coming along nicely.

I did this, never had the carpet so I can't tell you a comparison, but it isn't loud or hot or anything in my opinion, plus its easy as pie to clean.

It will be louder and floor will be warmer anytime you have less between you and the motor sound and road noise and heat

I like the stance...looking good

I have to say those dodge rims and tires look a lot better now that it is lowered.....looked a little funny before.

Looks good lowered.. 8)

It really brought it all together. I was getting sick of the elephant on rollerskates look it had going on.

Hey Slammed your truck is looking great. How big of a drop did you do to it? Its sitting right where i want my 83.

It came down about 5/7. I flipped the rear end with saddles I got from a vendor on 67-72. I need to get shock extenders for it, the rear is bottomed out. The front is drop spindles and 1 cut coil. The spindles are some no name guys I got on off a parts truck about 4 years ago.
-
That truck looks a thousand times better now that its lowered.
-
truck is looking sweet. I had to laugh about the circle K. I pictured the one on 60 as you come into Globe. I used to stop there all the time when I was a kid.
-
Well... Let's see. I've been on breaks from the forums lately. I haven't done much to the truck in the last 6 months but cruise it. About 7 months ago I had the frame repaired around the steering box. Then, put new tires on it.
Now, well the 465 is making a terrible noise in 3rd gear. It has been for a while now, and the truck has been limited to surface street cruising. I bought another 465 for it yesterday, and I'll be putting it in this weekend. I also ordered a EZ-wiring universal harness for it. It's time for the cobbled/patched up factory harness to go. I've got a small list to knock out before it gets hot again. I'll update as I get into stuff. And I'll be adding some pics later on tonight.

Here was the hole in the frame, I took it into a shop and had that section of frame fixed.

That frame sure looks like it was repaired once before. If the shop didn't do it as part of their repair this time, you should install a Steering Box Gusset Kit (http://autofab.com/i-9622365-73-87-chevy-gmc-2wd-truck-steering-box-gusset-kit.html). It's an easy install that should keep the frame from tin canning again.
-
It was done when I first bought the truck in 09. At that time, the rear mounting area had the cracks. The weld shop I took the truck to removed the damaged areas, including the previous repair and plated it. The older kat that owns the place has done this repair a hundred times before. Almost 8 months later, no issues at all with it.

(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/03/18/uma5eqyp.jpg)Here's the "new" 465. I'm hopefully going to do a 5.3 swap later this year, I'll decide on a final transmission then.

Friday was another good parts day. My new wiring harness came in and had another great Craigslist score.
The seat is a PD takeout from an 07-13 Tahoe. This is the second row seat, it's brand new, and pretty comfy. I'm going to use 2 sets of stock bench brackets to mount the 60/40, pics will be coming for the install, but it'll be a while. My dance card is pretty full for the next month.

I got a tip that an online audio store was having a buy one get one free sale on EFX battery terminals, I decided to get in on it. These are sweet! They have a 1/0 hole, a 4 gauge hole and two 8 gauge holes. I got both for $15 shipped.
They'll come in handy when I get around putting an amp and woofers in the truck.

Those clamps are going to work great for stereo equipment.
-
Started tearing down the seats today. Used a T 30 torx bit, a 14, 15 and 19 mm sockets and an as yet unidentified torx, I'm thinking T55-60. I need to load the 60 side of the seat up and go figure it out. Also used a small pair of needle nose to loosen the clips holding the struts on.
While I'm at it, I need to get a few more cutters for my roto-zip so I can cut out the welded brackets.
I got really into the tear down, and didn't take a lot of pics, but here is what I did take.

Would love to see those seats installed. I'm trying to decide on seats for mine.

I'm going to get some bench sliders and suburban seat mounts tomorrow afternoon. And it looks like my camping trip next weekend might be off, so the seats might be in sooner than expected

Swapped out the my 465 with the Craigslist 465 and still have the grinding noise in third gear.
A slight recap:
Last year, the truck picked up a grinding noise in third, only when I'm easy on the pedal. At first it was every once in a while, then it became a constant thing. I decided to dump the fluid in the transmission, since I hadn't done it in the 3 and a half years I'd owned the truck. I only got two quarts out of it. I thought a bearing had burned up. I limited the truck to in town cruising and pretty well just dealt with the noise.
Now that I swapped the trans, I still have the grinding noise. I'm not sure what else to look for. I would think if it was a differential issue I'd hear it all the time, not just in third. The u joints were done 6 months before this came up, and I keep them greased. The clutch is 4 years old and still grabs near the top of the pedal cycle.
Does anyone have any ideas?

I am with you, to swap out a trans and have it do the same thing is staggering odds. Not that is can not happen. Did you check the shifter for the clutch to make sure it was not hitting or binding on something when you put it into third ?
-
I didn't see or feel any bind when I put the clutch in. The trans shifts as smooth as a 465 can. Someone on Facebook recommended adjusting the shifter, that it's over engaging third. I've never heard of adjusting the shifter on a 465. I wonder if he was thinking I have a saginaw

It makes since what he said, but I am with you, never heard if or how you could adjust a Sm465 for individual gears.
So I just found this, see if any of this sounds like what yours is doing.
http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/sm465/index.html
The "ball and socket joint" they are talking about might be worn in the area where you shift it into 3rd.
Let us know if you find out anything.
-
Thanks Bake! Maybe. I did swap the shifter from my original tranny to this one. I think I'll change it to the one that came with the box and see what happens. Could be that easy

I am interested in seeing if that fixes it, let us know.
-
Well, the shifter didn't help. After a lot of asking questions, I'm pretty sure it's the input shaft bearing, and the new trans sounds worse than the old one.
This helped me realize I should of just gone with a 5 speed in the first place. Gotten what I wanted instead of just trying to limp through.
Gotta save some cash, hopefully get a trans next month.

Just had a thought that might be the answer to my Transmission woes.
I got lazy when I did the clutch back in 2010, and I didn't change the pilot bushing. Wouldn't that cause the input shaft to slap around when in high gear. The high gear (3rd or 4th depending on how you look at it) is at the front of the case, which is closest to the input shaft.
Using this logic, unless someone thinks otherwise, I'm going to pull the trans back out and change the pilot bushing.
I found out the property I work at has sold and closes at the end of next month, and I'm really going to need my truck.

I pulled the bearing retainer off last night, and was greeted with this.

Is that notch in the race towards the bottom of the picture supposed to be there? And could anyone tell me how to get the input shaft out?

That's normal slammed79.

Okay, to update on this truck, she's been sitting since December. But backing up to May/June of 2014.
I serviced the oil in the 465 they I had swapped in, and then drove the truck. When I got laid off in June, I started another job 4 days later. It was about 20 miles from home. The truck handled the drive like a champ, except for the 1/2 synchro was shot. The truck was getting 17mpg on the freeway and I was happy enough.
I bought the dually in July, and drove it primarily for the next few months. Then when I started having problems with the dually, I jumped back into this one. In December, reverse started going out, and I could barely get the truck into first. It was time to park it.
I was getting off work on Friday, jump in the truck and start driving home. I was already planning on doing the steering column on the dually that night so I could start driving it again, when I noticed the fender sticking up over the hood of my Baby. I got home and saw this.

Rage doesn't even begin to describe what I was feeling. No note, no nothing. I got the dually running that night and let this one sit. It took a couple weeks to stop being so mad about it to start a game plan on what to do.
I started hunting for some good used fenders, which took a while. I ended up finding a pair and a core support for a good price and picked them up. I also gutted the stock wiring harness and laid out the aftermarket one I picked up in 2014. I also bought a porterbuilt a/c delete panel. Then AZ summer showed up, and I haven't touched the truck since around May. I'm missing pictures of the fender on the truck, and the looming work so far. I'll have to get fresh pictures tonight.
I'm starting to focus on this truck again. I'm going to try and get her running and looking halfway decent for the goodguys Del Mar show in February.
I bought a V8 T5 for it, and am calling a recommended trans guy to get it inspected.
I don't know if I'm going to use the Tahoe seats I bought in this truck, I'm thinking I may go a different route. Right now, my focus is to get it running, I'd like to drive it again.

Got the trans inspected, and back from the guy. He swapped the case for a GM pattern, apparently the later 6 cyl camaro T5's shared a bolt pattern with ford. It needed a couple of bearings and the shifter gate was broken. The guy didn't charge me an arm and a leg, which makes me happy. I got out of it for less than $200.
Now it's time to get to work. I need to get a clutch disc and a slip yoke. I've also been reading up on how to swap the vss for a mechanical speedo using th350 parts.
