Title: Power Steering Pump Alignment?
Post by: HighBall on February 10, 2011, 10:59:33 pm
I'm new here so be easy. I have an '87 1 ton 4x4 454 turbo 400. I put a new power steering pump on it and cant get it aligned with the other pulleys right. This truck does have hydroboost. Didn't pay attention when I took it off whether or not it was aligned. The pulley is pressed flush so I think its something to do with the bracket and the pulley is the right one, too.Wondering if anyone has had same problem. Maybe I'm missing a spacer somewhere? I've looked for previous posts dealing with this and come up with nothin, if there is one I'd appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction.

When I bought my 74 the power steering did not line up either.  I made some tube spacers and used longer bolts to get it to line up, now it is all straight and even.  I don't know if mine was suppose to be straight or not, but it made me feel better.  Do you have any pics ?  Pics help out a lot with people giving answer's.  And welcome to the site from California.

I'm thinkin I will end up makin my own spacers too. I bet it was crooked when I took it off considering the PS system was full of motor oil when I drained it! I will try to put some pics up today.

Usually there is a spacer that goes between the bracket and the head. I think about 1/2".

I usually just make my own as well if it's a V groove and not a show vehicle.

I think that was a typo.  He probably meant to say
"my wife had a say", meaning, he's spending too much time on it.

Or, could it be?.......

is this a fairly common problem on these because mine did not line up either and did the same kind of deal as Vile?

I know you don't have this particular power steering pump bracket, but the instructions tell you how to align the pump and such.

If that picture isn't big enough for you let me know, and I'll upload a larger version.
