Title: Hello, new here and hope someone can help
Post by: harleyguy on February 17, 2011, 06:34:55 pm
As i said i am new to this site and i hope someone can help me. When i was a kid my father bought a 79 Chevy Sport 4x4 with the color combo of Cardinal red over Black with red interior. We live in Va and at the time there was only one other truck with the same paint color in the entire area. The strange thing about this is that there really only were 2 of these trucks around with the red over black and 4x4, both of which came from the same dealership which had them shipped in from a larger dealership in northern Va. My fathers truck is long gone but the other truck is still owned by the original owner and is still the original red and black. I have talked the owner into selling me the truck and was wondering if anyone can tell me why there were only 2 of these trucks around the entire central va area, was the red over black a special edition of the Chevy Sport or was the red over black just an unpopular color combo. I have tried to research the Chevy Sport and in doing so i found a dealership sales paper listing the availible color codes and in 79 Cardinal Red over black is not listed as an available color option. Any help would be greatly appreciated in gaining info on the Chevy Sport 4x4 trucks sold in 79. Thank You

here's a great resource for info on your truck
http://www.gmheritagecenter.com/gm-heritage-archive/vehicle-information-kits.html (http://www.gmheritagecenter.com/gm-heritage-archive/vehicle-information-kits.html)

It is possible that the color combo wasn't too popular or even that it was a dealer conversion package.

As 1980c10 said the link to gm heritage will give you the rpo codes for your year and model truck.  The other option why there was only 2 trucks was that the dealership special ordered, or had them painted aftermarket to specialize the trucks.  The only way to find that out is if the dealership kept really great records and are still around.
     Also welcome to the site.

Thanks to the few replys. I do not have any pics at this time and thanks for welcoming me to the site. My dad tought me how to drive in the one he had and the owner of this truck knows my reasons for wanting his truck. I think it is too cool that 32yrs ago everyone used to refer to this guy as the owner of the other truck and now I will be the other guy.....or in this case, the only other guy. Sunday will not come soon enough, and I can't wait to see the look on my dads face when he sees what truck I'm taking him to look at with me.

I am like a little kid on Christmas eve. Last night I couldn't sleep for nothing, thinking about my dad letting me drive his truck when I was a kid and thinking about all the times we went 4 wheeling in his. I have one more day to keep my secret from him about getting this truck and it is killing me. I can't wait to see the look on his face when he sees that old truck.

Sorry to say...I did not buy the truck. There was nothing left of it. The guy had been using it as a farm truck for the last 8 years so there was nothing left of the body to even salvage. And the thing had 411 gears in the rear with 373 gears in the front.....my God I never in my life have seen someone so dence as this guy.

Oh well at least my oldman got a kick outa seeing that old truck. It brought back alot of memories and alot of laughing about the past on the long ride home. I guess i will just go back to tinkering with my old GMC 4x4.
