Title: Grandfathers memory 78 GMC 3/4 ton pickup.
Post by: audrima on February 20, 2011, 10:26:19 pm
hey, I'm Mariah (ah a girl run! :P). Well Where to began. ah the beginning, My Grandfather bought this 1978 GMC Sierra (2500 hd?) 3/4 ton pickup new in 77 and optioned it himself. he drove it since then. I remember when I was young going camping and going for coal (his furnace was cold heated. ). In 97 he bought a new truck due to doctors orders, he was not allowed to drive a manual anymore. So this truck was used here and there by my dad after that. In 2000 my grandfather had my dad redo the truck. a New "rust free" bed was found (still have the old one!) Floor pans, cab corners, rockers were all replaced the bench seat was redone or replaced. and the whole truck was cleaned up and repainted. we used it to move stuff until the 2005 where it was parked in front of an old church on my grandfathers property. I've always wanted the truck, I have no use for it but soo wanted it because it was my grandfathers and I had good memories from it. My Grandfather passed way earlier this month (feb 2nd 2011) and  1 weeks ago  I was given the truck. So my little kia (01 kia Optima) was killed by a bus (no I was not hit but was forced off the road, destroyed the oil pan and the oil pump. and the top end burnt out my dad said) so I need the truck to drive around until I get another car or the weather turns so I can ride my scooter. ^_^

So right now the plan is to fix her to run her. with out any more typing the pictures :)

the day I pulled her out:

It's always a good thing when you save a truck that belonged to a family member, keep up the good work.

thanks everyone. :)

Today I got the truck inspected and the fluids changed and some other stuff done. like window cranks. she runs great! but had to have her towed to a shop, the front brake thingy seized on it and the wheel would not move. I told the guy just rebuild both and make sure the back are working well. yay! :D learning experience ^_^

thanks I like driving her. :) the brakes are fixed cost me $260!  I pick her up tomorrow! yay! I'm trying to think of a way to make her look nicer on the cheap right now thinking ether flat black rattle can job. or we might take the time and repaint it the color it is now. we still have the color sitting at my dads. :D  but that's for little later. right now I need to figure out why I don't have high wipers, no heat (blower I belive) and like why the steering wheel is all stick and big o0

im using this method on my 81 and my buddy's 66...

You can start new posts for each of the issues you have and we can reply specifically to each one.

In my opinion, I would leave the paint as is for now. rattle can paint jobs dont come out all that well, so you would just be wasting money.

A locking cap would probably be best for now, shotgun next.   ;D
Title: Re: Grandfathers memory 78 GMC 3/4 ton pickup.
Post by: beastie_3 on April 09, 2011, 11:00:07 pm
Yup, locking caps are a must. Especially with gas here around 4.20/gal Remember to keep a spare set of those keys somewhere else.

I'm liking the red, i'd leave it that color. Maybe a nice set of wheels and what I would do with the steering wheel is replace it with one from a 88-94. I got one for my 85 a couple years back for nine bucks. It really updates the interior. Just my .02
Title: Re: Grandfathers memory 78 GMC 3/4 ton pickup.
Post by: 87454westernhauler on April 10, 2011, 02:28:08 pm
that sucks when people seal your fuel, >:( when we first got our 87 western hauler when gas was over $4.50, some smart person thought that they needed all of the 60 gallons of gas out of the bed tank. that sucks. I would third locking gas cap. ;D
Title: Re: Grandfathers memory 78 GMC 3/4 ton pickup.
Post by: audrima on April 10, 2011, 08:29:13 pm
ya the gas cap is being bought tomorrow when I have money  in the bank hehe.  wheels are long down the road. I like the 16in stock ones anyway just going to clean up and repaint them nice. tires hm don't know have to sell my 205-70-r15 (I think) tires I pulled off my kia (less than 500 miles on them! >.<). then we will see what I can do. I have a nice grant wheel sitting in my closet so that's going in bought the adapter from summit last week :). don't know if I will paint her stock read again or a Metallic dark green. with a matallic midnight blue roof fade. I might do a nice stock red  again but put a sparkly candy coat over it ^_^

ya totally sucked having over 10gal taken! :( and me w/o a job that's really really needed gas.

I put 2gal in to try to get here to start she turns over but will not fire o0 don't know what is wrong. will not get back to her until wensday. lucky I have mom's 2010 honda CRV for tonight (have a doc apt tomorrow) and free the rest of the week.

double check that speedo cable. It's easy to put it together and not have the cable inserted correctly at the transmission

If you're looking for tunes on the cheap, you can score an am/fm at the junkyard for $20

If you cant find a working radio at the junk yard, and are willing to spend a little more money, there are decks that look stock, but are top notch on technology inside, some even have MP3 or iPod hookups.

Thanks, yes there is a lot of memories with her and I like to get her all finished so on day when I have a child I can pass it down to them.

Right now I'm looking to replace the seals and such.  I would like to get her running and fully street legal before I do anything cosmetic. Safe and reliable is the first thing on my list. ^_^

right now I'm working on getting the e-brake fixed (does not work all the way) and check the rear breaks, and the steering is kind of wobbly now (like a tired is not on all the way). =^_^=

Yes, there is a right and wrong way to install a filter. Its 50/50 if you dont read which way it is supposed to go.

I got it in right ^_^, I also "installed" a radio. Found a set of speaker in a box thingy (2 comps in a carpet covered box) and wired that to a "Radio" from a 07 Rocketa Bali-150 lol  ran some wires and hide it under the seat. it sucks but it's tunes from my XM unit so as long as I'm not on the interstate or revving high I can here it.

This weekend if I'm not dragged all around the state. I will be working on my truck, Air filter, hood, maybe them side steps and hitch, speedo cable(again >.<)  and general cleaning. :)

yes I plan on getting some stuff from the j-yards but here there is not much pre-95 cars/trucks they were mostly crushed when salvage went to $15/100lbs. the ones that are left are picked rather clean. but I should be able to get some stuff I want ;)

Thats a real clean truck! When are you getting a passenger side window crank, and what are you going to do for a horn button? And this is how I mounted my CB. I mounted it in 2 existing holes under the dash.
and I did something similar to gotsmeuh with the ash tray....

lol, I will replace the passenger side crank the same day I replace the drivers side :P for now the vice grip that been used for 10 years will have to do (need to replace the whole system!). I'm ordering the horn button tonight. :P nice mounting, ya the ashtray would be nice but my cb is a tad big for there lol. under like c20 has is taken by the mounting bracket for the trailer e-brake. plus you can't see it in the pic but there is all the aux power cables n such there in the ashtray lol.

Slight side track question.

How do you guys get on using a CB while driving? Over here you'd get a $150 fine and 3 points on your licence. Same as a mobile phone.

Only state I can think of to be that stupid would be Cali lol. Cellphones yes CB's naw there half duplex devices and well cb means citizen band radio! Heck police use it to help people like o my pilot car drivers would lose there lic and all there money! Use it just don't be a moron with it. :p

i use mine whenever my friends and i are cruising around town or hauling scrap. we have state, county, and city cops in the town where i live. the only cops that ever do anything are the state cops, because the county and city cops are too lazy. my cb also has a pa on it. so me and my buddies just usually ride around yelling obscenities at kids we know. hahah.

Europe is stricter than even Cali, but I do agree with the cell law. Most people can't text and drive or talk and drive for that matter, the hands free thing makes sense to me, just too bad the bluetooth head units are so expensive. I will never wear one of those headset things, I can't stand those, makes you look like you got assimilated into the Borg collective!

O yes the cell law is good just a law banning using cb would be stupid.

If you are looking at the tires they don't turn as much in the way of direction when locked, this is part of the suspension Geometry...

i think she is saying that one tire turns to 45 deg while the other is sitting at 50
Title: Re: Grandfathers memory 78 GMC 3/4 ton pickup.
Post by: Engineer on November 03, 2011, 09:00:44 pm
The correct terminology is "toe out on turns".

During a turn, the inside tire rolls through a smaller diameter circle so it has to be turned into the direction of the turn more to keep from scrubbing the tire tread.
