There are certain areas around Norfolk I would definately stay clear of. Take your time in finding an area and drive around and scope out areas. I personally would reside in Newport News, which is on the other side of the tunnels, but, that depends on many factors.

Lived up in Smithfield. Easy run to Portsmouth and a quieter place to live. Just try not to go through tunnels on your commute. They are to small for the traffic and population growth and become daily chokepoints of bad drivers.

I live about 40 mins west but I work in the area every day and recommend not actually living in Portsmouth. Not a very "nice" city. Go to chesapeke. Western Branch or Dock Landing area. If you're working in Portsmouth, do yourself a big favor and not live where you will have to commute across through ANY of the tunnels. If you don't mind say a thirty min commute, you have lots of options. Southern chesapeke, northern Suffolk, western tidewater.

not bad places south of chesapeake...along 158 on the way to the outer banks of north carolina, hatteras, nags head, etc...I think its called indian river, close to the NC border. That way you are still south and east of the tunnels.

Sorry I missed this thread earlier. I live in Chesapeake. Did you find a place to live yet? If so where did you decide to go?

Heard it was one of the better places, looking at Realtors web site Trying to find something nice, but they wont hold it but two weeks so gonna just have to pack up and move there and hope to find a place that is right for my family.

Have family that lives in smithfield we tend to be down in that general area atleast 6-8 times a year. My uncle works in newport news and compains that the commute Is horrible. Can't say too much for what neighborhoods too look at but like others said I'd avoid tunnels. I like visiting the area there is aleays something to do but its a completeky diff atmosphre from where I'm at.i
