Title: Been real busy last couple of weeks
Post by: zieg85 on February 28, 2011, 09:11:54 pm
Well I just adjusted my signature to reflect my current line up.  Sold most of my 2 parts trucks to a father/son duo that is building a couple after initially coming to buy the blue tweed seat from the 87 I had here on the classifieds.  Long story today I landed a decent 85 C-10 with a topper that is perfect to turn my 17 year old loose in after I fix a few things on it. The transmission is missing 2nd gear, never had one do that before.  I think it is a TH350C but have not crawled under to verify.  Anyway I am real happy with my find and even more excited that I can make my 86 C-10 for me as originally intended.  Pictures to come...

Nice going on the liquidation.  Question for ya, what 4 speed are you running that has OD?

The option code is MY6 which is a New Process A833 geared almost identical to the 700R4.  First gear is 3.06 while 4th is overdrive at .71

must be hard to find, all I can locate are mopar a833.  I was thinking that would make a perfect intermediate trans for my dream truck.

Do you have any more info on that NP A833

That's really cool. There's no better truck than these to have as your first.

http://www.motivegear.com/tech_info/tranny_guide/tranny_guide.html  mentions it that it was available in the 81-86 models GM trucks  I used to have additional info however the pages saved in my bookmarks are not valid any longer

http://www.slantsix.org/articles/4-speeds/ODA833fourspeed1.htm on the transmissions themselves.  Basically it is the GM version identical in size to the 3 speed Muncie but most have a different bolt pattern to the bell housing which most of the 81 and newer aluminum bell housings have the dual sets of holes for the drivers side.  I've managed to collect 3 but only 2 have shifters...

My oldest started out in a red 86 GMC 1500 as his first but much rougher shape than the 85 is.  Nice to have a shed full of parts to keep it going should something happen is a plus too...

The chevy version of the A833 is a rare one, good score!

I never knew about the A833 that would be a great transmission for a 4 speed.  Is there an outside appearance that is different between a A833 and say a Sm465 ?

So if you found a diesel k10 4 speed manual, more than likely it would be the A833 ?

In a bookmarked link I had that no longer is valid out of all the standard transmissions sold 0.6% were the MY6 optioned 4 speed OD.  Any owners manual 81-86 shows the transmission in it.

Here is a couple of pictures of the beast

Had some decent weather and had some father-son time on the truck.  Pleasantly surprised that after we took out several sets of floor mats the original floor covering is in perfect shape.  Took the seat out and vacuumed out the interior, only about 50 cents in change was found.  We installed the factory 4 speaker system and the red cloth Suburban front seat from my 1991 parts truck, sits real nice.  My 3 small gauges didn't work and luckily it turned out to be a bad circuit board.  Took one off the shelf and everything came to life so I put the speedometer and fuel gauge back into it, had the kid clean the rest and made sure all the dash lights worked.  Tomorrow, weather permitting we'll put the tilt column in it and put the dash all back together.  This is really turning out to be a nice truck.  More as we progress...

Took it for a 260 mile round trip and was pleasantly surprised with 16.2 mpg, not bad considering 2nd gear is out in the transmission...

I gave it some love last night by putting it in the garage for a fun day of heater core replacement today.  I have to say I was dreading the deed with the dealer installed AC but after I got into it the unit did not interfere at all and I had it all done in a couple of hours including new heater hoses, thermostat and gasket.  Good to -34 F, it is sure nice having heat again and not smelling of antifreeze....

Zieg that truck is looking pretty good, how often do you get to drive it ?

Maybe once every 3-4 weeks, maybe.  Now it has heat maybe more.  I bought it for my youngest as a first vehicle once he gets his license which none of us is in a big hurry to do it as he has no job to help support driving it.  He is a pretty good driver however more practice will always be helpful.  Looking for a smaller car for him which would get better MPG as he seems a bit indifference with a truck to drive...

I have a company car with free gas so it is hard to justify driving it unless I need to haul something that won't fit in the Escape.

Zieg,
I'm interested in the steering column swap. What did you put in it and how involved was it? I'm sure it wouldnt be that bad to do if it was a similar year, but hard to find one that is in better shape. Did you use a newer one? How many mods were needed if so...?

No mods at all, it is a direct bolt in if you stay within your year range.  84-87 because of the integrated wiper/dimmer switch on the turn signal stalk.  I put a tilt out of a 1987 into the 1985.  You should be able to go even newer but I haven't actually tried it.  I did put a 1984 column into a 1982 and converted the switches but back then it was before I had internet so it was trial and error.  The dimmer was no problem but it took a few tries to get the wiper switch right.  The early columns 73-77 or so used a different clamp on style coupler under the hood so it you have that style you will need the matching intermediate shaft.

The gear shifter part under the hood is on the opposite side.

Don't know the answer, sorry.  The last one, a 1991 C2500,  I parted out I didn't remove the column to compare, just noticed the shifting linkage at the firewall.

It will fit just fine, I just meant I haven't tried it yet.  I am going to put the 1991 Suburban column in my 1985 in April or so.

Since the spring is like summer it is transmission R&R time... Out with the TH350 and in with the 700R4.  Piece of cake so far, except the cross member isn't working out like I thought it would.  I knew it had to be moved but I thought the holes were all there... some but not all... I also compared another cross member which was also different.  I guess I will have to drill at least 1 hole in the frame.  Mosquitoes got the best of me so I hope to finish up tomorrow.

Pesky little mosquitoes aren't they.  Well I guess 1 hole is better than having to drill 2 or more holes.  I wonder if it was a difference in years of frames or cross members ?  I thought that I have seen on the forum before that others have done the swap without having to drill any holes.

All you had to do was drill 1 hole ?  Cable and everything else hooked right up ?

yes, right side rear on the bottom, actually elongate the hole.  Shift points are later than I would like but still liveable.

Do you have a stock 350 in front of it ?
I am thinking about picking up one of 2 trucks for my D.D., either a 75 with a slightly built 350 I think, or a 74 with a stock 305.
Both are 2wd and I was hoping to switch out the trans for a 700r4 sometime down the road.  That is why I was so curious about the swap and how it handled.

Stock 305, 120K, 2.73 rear.  Impressive first gear, the jury is still out whether the overdrive is gonna work.  Seems to shift into OD about 62.  It is nice having a 2nd gear...

Bittersweet on this one.... A fellow from church was in a bad wreck, (not his fault) and was off work about 9 weeks and just before he was released to go back to work asked if I knew of any used trucks???  I told him I would let him use this one until he found a replacement or he could buy it.  It was 4 weeks ago and I asked him today what his intentions were as we have another driver in the household.  He said he wasn't going to buy it and was looking... but about an hour later while I was watching the Kansas race he phoned and said he got to thinking he was going to buy it after all... So the search is on for a replacement...  I'd like to find a TBI 87 4.3L automatic close by...  I like the hunt...

So now you will be down to 2 85's, an 86, and hopefully an 87, not a bad line up.  8)
