Title: squeaking from suspension on acceleration
Post by: Herleybob on March 02, 2011, 12:23:25 am
Whenever i accelerate i hear a squeaking noise, quite annoying.

I looked underneath real fast and i see my parking brake line is rubbing the bottom of my exhaust and its kinda tight.

Do you think that whenever i accelerate its making that vibrate up and down making it squeak? I haven't had time to wrap it in something and take it for a spin just to see if thats it. What would be the permanent fix on this?

How much pedal travel do you have when you set your brake? might want to think about loosening it a little so the cable doesn't make contact with the exhaust.

As for the noise, I guess you can sit in the vehicle while someone shakes the cable against the exhaust to determine if that is the noise or not. You do mention suspension in your title, but nothing of it in your post...

You can also check to see if the noise is from the suspension by cycling the suspension at each corner.

Herleybob I've had universal joints squeak before.
Just another idea for you.

First question, does it sound like metal noise or something else ?  In my experience u-joints get loose and make a clunk sound.  I know suspension can squeak. (like a rubber sound squeak)  Bushing.  Metal would be springs that are cracked or busted, shackles, etc. etc.  You have to jack up the car  and let the suspension droop and cycle it piece by piece if it is indeed the suspension to find the culprit or culprits.  Does it seem to rear up when you accelerate or the back drop excessive ?  Does it seem to twist at all, (front to the right, back to the  left).
    More details please ?

If the u joint is dry it will squeak, like a chip chirp chirp Sometimes when you first accelerate then you don't hear it, other times it will speed up with the RPMs of the drive line. I have heard them only squeak on decell as well. If they are clunking they are probably way past the squeaking stage.

I put it in drive or reverse and it bangs like crazy when it engages. Ive heard that the u joints will cause that but i was wondering if it was my aussie locker.

Im thinking it is my u joints. I will go to schucks and buy some today. Should i buy the cheap ones or the more expensive? I know thats a dumb question but are the expensive ones really worth it?

And its a metal type squeak. Coming from behind the cab, and it does make a chirping type sound, i just didnt know how to explain it. And its excessively loud.

Is the front wall of the bed bashed forward, and rubbing against the back of the cab?

Yes get new u-joints.  Yes it matters on quality.  The more expensive ones last longer.  If this is not a daily driver though and you don't get on it all the time, the cheaper ones are fine.

It doesnt matter what u joints you get if your angles are off or dont grease them regularly.

replaced the u joints and the squeaking is gone! they were pretty bad, they were ground down in spots and that was probably making them squeak. I greased them before replacing them and it didnt help. Bought the heavy duty expensive ones.

Thanks all.
