guys i have a 10bolt 8.5 in my 82 c10 with 2.73 gears and an open diff. im getting ready to order 4.11s, lsd, and a master install kit. this got me thinking though i can get a 12 bolt for $100 would it be worth it? either way i go im gonna get new gears, and a lsd. ive seen 10 bolts take some abuse, but if the 12 bolt would be better i dont mind swapping it out. so what are your opinions should i stay with the 10 bolt or get a 12 bolt in it. will be steet/track truck, with a goal of 11s. at the track ill be running 28x10.5 slicks.

I have heard that both are pretty much equal for strength. If you have the coin you may want to go with a Ford 9" like many have done on this site.

The 12 bolt is stronger. No question. For 100 bucks I say buy it.
GM 10 Bolt 8.5" ring gear - axles are either 28 or 30 spline
GM 12 Bolt 8.875" ring gear - axles are 30 spline
It may not be a huge difference, but spline count and ring gear size matter. If you're still unsure and really want strong go with Zeig85's suggestion of the Ford 9".

well the 12 bolt sold fast should have jumped on it, but wasnt sure. anyway theres plenty of junk yards here that sell differentials for $100-$120 just have to remove them myself. i dont want to do the ford 9" just want something that will bolt on. if not ill stay 10 bolt.
